How do you pronounce 'Ibanez'?
Hi everybody,
In the film 'Starship troopers' the character played by Denise Richards is called Carmen Ibanez. In the film, when they say her name, they say 'Ib
a
nez'. I have always pronounced it like this '
I
banez'. I was just wondering how all of you pronounced it?
Kind regards,
Myst and rain

Re: How do you pronounce 'Ibanez'?
Oh, that's right... It's Spanish. Check this out: Tengo una guitarra nueva de Ibanez! (I've got a new Ibanez guitar!)
That sounds cool! Seeing that it's Spanish, the official way to pronounce it would be the second option in the poll then, I think. Ib
a
nez. 'Hey everybody. I've got a new Ib
a
nez guitar.'. That sounds funny. I think I'll stick with
I
banez, then. Even though it's not the correct way to say it.
Kind regards,
Myst and rain

Re: How do you pronounce 'Ibanez'?
Well, I heard 2 diffrent stories:
If Im not mistaken, Hoshino was a music hsop in japan that imported guitars that were made in spain.
One of the sotries says that When the Civil war in spain stopped the flow of guitars, they started making guitar themselves and they named them Ibanez
The other story says that ater WW2 when they decided to sell guitars in the USA they had to go with something that didnt sound Japanese, so they named their guitars Ibanez (wich sounds like a spanish brand).
In any case, they didnt spell it properly because the n should ve been an ñ (but this letter does not exist in the english alphabet). The way Ibañez is pronounced in spanish is IbAniez.
So, IMHO we are left with a misspelled spanish word. I always pronounced it IbAnez.
Just my 2 cents

I'm with Rob here, if they wanted it to be like Spanish they should've put the "~" above the "N".

Me too.
In japanese it would be written イバネズ and therefore pronounced "ee-ba-ne-zu". But I'm British so my way is the Lefty Robb way.
