Skwisgaar Skwigelf has a 10+ million dollar golden metronome, if that can't go over 9000 beats per second then Petrucci's insects definitely can't either.

Re: How fast can you shred?
1. I voted for 120--this is triplet-
picking
three-note-per-string ascending and descending scales.
2. I bet 1/2 the people on here are lying.
3. I agree that fast isn't anything if it's not tasty.
4. I don't think sweeps really count--that's halfway between strumming and picking.
5. If you want to get faster, practice slower and ALWAYS with a metronome of some sort.
6. I bet 1/2 the people on here don't care what I think.
Cheers,
Race

Re: How fast can you shred?
I don't really try to play as fast as possible all the time just for the sake of
speed
...
With that said, i'd say around 120 to 140 depending on what I'm doing, like tapping or sweep picking.
Lets be honest though, it's boring as hell to listen to a guitarist that plays 30 notes a measure if he doesn't have dynamics... It's cool to listen to a solo that has melody, speed, technique and tone altogether...
I think a guitarist should go for whatever sounds good to the listener, even if it isn't a million notes a measure.

Shawn Lane's NPS was 18 and Rusty Cooley's is 16 (So I've gathered). I'd really like the people who say they can play faster than Rusty frikken' Cooley (Quick reminder: he is probably one of the few American's more disciplined than the stereotypical Asian for practicing, and this includes his teens) to put their money where their mouth is and show me a video of their playing.

Come on mate, you don't expect people to back up their wildly exaggerated claims with actual proof do you?
This is the internet after all, if you can't make ridiculous claims here, where can you?
Rock on!

Re: How fast can you shred?
Ugh, don't get me started on that tool. Her only premise is that she's female and plays guitar fast. Even when there is no melodic element present she is still crap. She very nearly ruined Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to heaven, Rock you like a Hurrican and Jason becker for me all at the same time, and people still like her. How in the **** do you do that?
I'm not a fan of Dean but I feel sorry as **** for that poor guitar.

Re: How fast can you shred?
My 180-200 alternate picking is really solid.
I start getting soggy at about 220.

New recordings will be done by the by the beginning of March hopefully. The metronome tempo for "Speed, Surprise, and Violence of Action" is 195 for the intro, and Providence is something like 187 I think. The scratch tracks are at the studio. The end of "Creation Undone is 1152 notes in 1 minute 4 seconds (after the break) which averages out to something like 18 notes a second.

Re: How fast can you shred?
I Used to work decently hard on the whole
shred
thing.....until I got to university, and noticed that the girls were hanging around the guy playing stuff like "The Joker" and "Walk on the Wild Side." Lesson learned
