Re: How fast can you shred?

I can shred an average sized newspaper fairly quickly but I can get about 20 sheets into the shredder before it jams....

I'm pretty sure that Lane hit 19 NPS. I have no Idea what Cooley's NPS are but I'm sure he's hitting than 16 with way more complicated fingering than anybody claiming to hit 16 NPS here is.

That's what I thought for both Lane and Cooley. I found the statistics from here:

http://www.petrucciforum.com/forums/...ad.php?t=59998

Obviously, they can't be spot on and are definitely spotty in some spots (Jeff Loomis slower then Mark Tremonti? 33NPS sweeps?) but it overall gets the point across. From my experience most guys that play uber fast tend not go past the 140-50 range (Which is really, really fast). Even then, you can easily sound fast (and sound is what music is, lol) with stuff around 10 NPS or even less if you know what to do.

Re: How fast can you shred?

As fast as the paper goes in? Easier with 1 page A4 but I can get faster if I fold it 2 times

I worked out I can play 24notes in 1 second. But it was not nice to listen to

There is no way Loomis is slower than Mark Tremonti...not by a long shot. Not to be a "interwebz arguing d00dz" but Loomis can sweep it like a street sweeper. Loomis can easily keep it clean in the 220+ range (plus its easier to sweep faster, it just really is, until you start hitting unreal tempos.)

One reason Petrucci's style sounds so amazing is that he keeps his sweeps dimure and doesn't overuse them. Keeping the shred tasteful makes for both awesome listening and makes you keeps the "wow" factor high, instead of just "MINDLESS SHREDDING 101". But as most of us have seen in the Rock Discipline stuff, he can keep it clean well deep into the 200's single picking, which is nuts hard, and makes him a true ultra shredder. Gilbert is obviously another great example of another high BPM shredder.

Re: How fast can you shred?

I still have not come to terms with the term "SHRED". I hate it....it only appeared about 4 years ago and it annoys the **** out of me....its so ***.

I'm glad everyone is taking it with humour though. I remember a few years back on the DT forum there was a guy that claimed to be mega fast and when he eventually posted sound clips it was like that jackline girl. Just wiggling his wrist hitting anything that popped up.

Guitarists that are really high technical level tend to not get involved in "whos the fastest things" and only make statements with their playing

I'm pretty sure the word, "Shred" in reference to playing a really fast solo has been around longer than the past 4 years...?

Re: How fast can you shred?

Maybe a bit before that but not long. I remember buying loads of VHS in the 90's like all 3 of paul gilberts, john petrucci's, George Lynch, Kotzen, Impetrelli. Never heard the word shred in any and my dad used to print all the guitar mags in the factory he worked at so i got them all free every month for about 15 years. Never once did the word "SHRED" pop up.

Re: How fast can you shred?

Shred is like a shredder does to paper. Cut it to thousands of equal pieces.

That would go for notes, thousands of notes, done fast (cuts fast) and CLEAN, not a ****ing gribberish sloppy poop.
