How hard do you hit the strings?

Personally I play rock and metal rythym stuff really hard to get a nice clear agressive sound. I also play from really quietly to really digging in for single note stuff. Although, When im doing speed stuff I hit the strings really lightly.

What about everyone else.

Different depending on the song, section, guitar, amp, note, chord, strings, weather, if I'm wearing pants or not, etc.

(Electric)

HARD ! and VERY HARD depending on how aggressive i am feeling, This may or may not contribute to my destroying of the metal parts of most common makes of tremolo and more than usual string breakage.

(Acoustic)

Softer than normal, and normal just me fingers, If i need a pick attack sound i use my nails

(Nylons) <- Not under clangers for you US residents

Fingers Only, and harder than steel strung acoustics

And Yes i am a tad unconventional

Pants? as in underpants or trousers (slacks) and in what way does it determine hardness of attack? fear of catching your weenie

i like to hit the strings pretty hard but most of my sound comes from the plectrums i use (tortex 1.14mm). with the heavy picks you can just play how you feel and still get a clear note. they are also good for fast picking

Quite hard - Jimi/SRV teritory hard when I'm jamming and with the apropriate attack when I'm playing other people's songs.

Ever since i saw Jeff Beck in 1999 i've used only my fingers. I can't play as fast, but the amount of dynamic control and creativeness i've discovered has been more than worth it.

As hard as I can on lead. I use Jazz IIIs and have never broken a string after four years of playing, but I have Graph Tech saddles. And I pick fast too.

I think my choice pretty much sums it up. When i'm playing metal, I generally do hit the strings pretty hard to give it that aggressive feel. But when i'm going into speed licks it's more of a light touch. The same is true with clean chords as well. And depending on the rhythm situation, I may play individual slower note stuff with either a medium touch or by really digging in to the strings.
