Re: How many guitars and why?
The red one, 1990 RG550CM was bought after taking routers to three Stratocasters trying to make them into the guitars I really wanted, then finding the 550 and all that I'd done to the Strats was already there...
The silver one, 2004 RG2750EXVSL was an impulse buy. Saw it hanging in GC used last year, frets almost no wear and the body nearly perfect, walked out with it...
The blue one, 2010 RG1550MPBL, was bought after I sold a 1999 RG520QSB... I played it in a local music store and just had to have it.
All standard tuning... different p/ups in each.
Silver: Stock IBZ/DIMARZIO
Red: Evo Bridge and Neck, HS-2 in single mode
Blue: Evo2 Bridge, P.A.F. Pro neck and HS-3 in single mode... a little hotter and warmer than the HS-2.
Guitars are same woods, but all sound very different with the p/ups and just, well, wood is always different, even when it's the 'same'.

Re: How many guitars and why?
Two currently, and a third on the way.
ESP LTD MH-400 (Pretty blue quilt top and natural binding)
This is my "dark, warm, high output" guitar. It's been my main guitar for 5 years or so now.
Fender Highway 1 HSS Stratocaster (Transparent, satin brown finish)
I keep this thing around for the single coils, and the amazingly resonant body.
Incoming RG1451
This will be my brighter, high-ish output guitar. The fixed bridge and the amazing neck will probably ensure that I play it the most.
I'd like to get a 7 string soon-ish as well. Maybe an RGA7, or RG7321. Or, if I'm feeling adventurous, maybe a Carvin of some sort...

Re: How many guitars and why?
I'm fairly new to guitar, but I've got 3 right now. I have one that a friend built me that I will never get rid of, an acoustic and just recently got the Steve Vai JEM77V that I'm slowly but surely trying to master.

Re: How many guitars and why?
I'm back in thinning mode. Just sold one LP and selling my GMC 7 string. I think I'm in a good place now.
LP Axcess - Everyone needs a LP
Tele w/Texas Specials - Everyone needs a Tele
Tele w/Hot Rails - Possibly my favorite guitar?
Edwards LP w/P90s - Band's favorite guitar
61 RI SG - SGs rule
I still have my S540LTD and a Jackson Rhoades, but only because they aren't worth selling. The jackson hasn't been usable for 10 years or more and the S just collects dust

Re: How many guitars and why?
My guitars kind of run the gamut:
1980-something Gibson Les Paul custom shop
2008 Gretsch 5122
2008 Gretsch Pro jet w/ dan armstrong P90's
1966 Gibson Kalamazoo KG2a with Dimarzios
1980-something Hondo II p-bass (you laugh, but its one hell of a bass)
1986 Squier Stratocaster (essentially a fender with a squier logo)
1990-something Epiphone Les Paul PeeWee (i use it as a lap steel)
1998 Ibanez rg570 (too many mods to list)
1987 Ibanez 540p in Carotene Orange
1990 Ibanez rg550 in Desert Sun Yellow
1987 Ibanez rg560 in Lipstick Red
1987 Ibanez rg560 in Lipstick Red (yes, I have two)
1990-something Washburn N2 Nuno (I actually hate it, it is for sale)
*edit:
I almost forgot, I have one of them Chibanez FP77 Jem copies, replaced the neck with one from an rg370 and put dimarzios in it. Should be kinda cool when done.

RG570. Does everything from drop C# to Drop A# and always on a .13-.62 set (yea, it HATES C# hahaha)
RG7620. It's for a .105-48 with a low .68 in Drop A
I adore this guitar and all of its imperfections, dents and dead frets

Re: How many guitars and why?
I have about 10 plus a few that are unplayable.
the ones I play most are a
Schecter S1+ with the EMG 81-85 KK set
Washburn MG 70 with fender SCN noiseless
xiphos xpt 700
AXL Badwater with upgrades in 5 string keef tuning.
ones that I dont play much are a couple of Indie's,
a Kraken custom strat, Yamaha SPL II, Yamaha RGX
and a nice roadstar II with lovely super 70's pickups but slightly too much fretware.
as for why, its mainly because I just keep seeing them on ebay and cant resist a bargain.
I keep thinking the recession will end , the chinese cant keep giving guitars away for nothing and oil prices will make shipping guitars all over the world for pennies impossible, so guitars seem safer than banks at the moment.
