Well I first started when I was about 17 (1987), got into it more around 21, but I only got serious about learning last year.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?
I started when I'm 30+.
By the time I start to gig , I'll be 40+.
When I make my first album, it'll be 50+.
When I'll become a household name, I'll be 60+......lol
Man, I should have planned playing the guitar much younger. I think I just missed the boat

Started plinking when I was 12, but I didn't really jump in until 15 after I quit playing Violin. Not as many groupies for violinists, but I guess the quality could be higher. Oh well.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?
I learned to play when I was about twelve years old. I would always hit an obstacle when I got to barre chord technique. I have played off-and-on over the years and have gotten pretty serious about it since last September.
I can't say enough about the ability to read musical notation, in addition to tab. I have a piano background too in my past. I also take lessons, which I strongly encourage. My teacher is a great one and lets me play whatever the hell I want. No more Greensleeves out of the Mel Bay books for this chickie. A teacher can motivate you to practice, b/c who wants to look like an ass in their lesson. He can also spot problems with your technique, as well as, introduce you to new material. I just love my teacher and Friday lessons, and I'm 37 now.
My teacher has steered me into directions that I never dreamed about before. I was always more of a punk and new-wave girl, and
heavy metal
is new to me. I can't believe I'm playing Metallica, AC/DC, Ozzy, and Black Sabbath and loving it.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?
I want to add that not only do I encourage taking lessons, but finding the right teacher is very important. I took lessons as a kid in a neighbor's cigar smoke filled basement with a dim lightbulb overhead, and I didn't really like the music we were playing. I have learned recently that the right teacher can really bring out a person's unique tastes and playing styles. I am so hooked at this point, I can't imagine a day without picking up my guitar.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?
I was 14 when I first picked up a guitar and I have been self taught all the way, before that I was taking private piano lessons at the age of 7.
I have pretty much grown up around musical instruments.

Same here. I could pretty much pick up any instrument and play a song.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?
Man I envy you guys who've been playing since youth. I'm in the over 30 category (33), just learning now. I have a coworker who is 50+ who just started learning a year or two ago. I figured if he can do it in his 50s, why can't I do it in my 30s!
Luckily I do have some musical background though, which helps. I played piano in my youth, followed by trumpet in jr. high/high school bandclass. My knowledge of theory is
slowly
coming back to me.
