Re: I use a compressor.....
I put all the time, it's because I have no guitar amp at the moment so i'm running my effects unit though a
bass amp
and it's so difficult to get real definition with out it. back on guitar amp when i get round to buying a new one it'll be 70% of the time.

Sometimes.
I have a "Holdsworth" preset I made for my V-Amp Pro and the compressor is essential.

Re: I use a compressor.....
Rarely, when I do it's for the legato-friendly Holdsworthy tone or maybe for some acoustic/country-like things. Don't use it for other applications though.
edit: I would also use it when playing fretless for more sustain, but not all the time...

I'm doing about the same thing, only through a 16 track recorder and out to a home stereo so I'm using my compressor all the time

Re: I use a compressor.....
I can't imagine playing without one. It evens out my playing alot. Not that any of you guys play country. But I play in a country band, and for the twangy spanky stuff. It's essential. Plus, it make the weak notes come up when you don't hit them hard enough. Also, when you roll your volume back, it helps maintain you guitar volume level while still letting you guitar clean up. It adds attack to clean picking and even out finger picking. It also you to play with less gain and still maintain sustain.
Well, those are my excuses.

Re: I use a compressor.....
I voted rarely, because I was thinking recording, and I usually don't record very much (not much worth recording, I'm afraid). But, then I remembered, one of my favorite most used v-amp2 presets involves a compressor. (preset 6E --
high gain amp
into a compressor and a chorus, iirc.) So I probably should have voted 2 or 3, just because of that.
In recording, I usually use it more to wrangle unruly peaks than as an effect, with the aim being that the compression should be as unobtrusive as possible and hopefully under-the-radar, just keeping the levels out of trouble.

Yeah, I'm about to start getting into some country playing (possibly even thinking about getting a Tele), and I figured I would possibly look into getting a compressor by then...
