Question

Insects

Would/do you feel bad after killing an insect?

I do. Sometimes I end up killing an insect by accident, and I feel like crap.

I remember one time I was riding my bike, and I saw a snail in the middle of the road. So I picked it up from the road and placed it in the bushes. Because I couldn't stand the thought of it being run over, while I could have helped it. A snail isn't an insect, but it's still a very small animal.

A lot of people around me think that this sort of behaviour is madness. But, to me, insects and snails and other small animals have feelings to.

I was just wondering how many people here on jemsite suffer from the same 'neurosis'.

Re: Insects

I don't kill them. I will catch a fly in the house and take it outside and release it. They don't know better. No point in killing anything unnecessarily. That said, if a bug is biting me (mosquitos, horse flies) I have no remorse.

Mosquitos. That's a big problem. They bug the hell out of me when I'm trying to sleep! But, you know, I feel bad about whacking them. So what I try to do is, I put a light on outside of my room, and then I open my door. Mosquitos move towards the light. So if I'm lucky they fly out of my room.

I've had this really big, greenish fly on my leg once that we in The Netherlands call a 'steekvlieg'. If you translate that literally it's 'stingfly'. These are mean bugs. These guys sting you with something. Like bees do. They're really scary. Anyways, I couldn't get it off my leg. So I hit it harder to get it off, I succeeded, but it was probably hurt by me striking it. What was I supposed to do? Let it sting me? Who knows what kind of illness these guys carry with them. Anyways, this was a long time ago. If I would be in the same situation now, I would try to find way to get it off my leg, without hurting it.

Re: Insects

No man, they're bugs. I won't go out of my way to kill them, but any one in my house is getting squished.

don't you ever do anything not 100% rational in your life? i know it's not right, but i'm totally terrorized by spiders, scorpions, millepedes etc, they make me jump to the roof, so if i'll ever found one of these in my house i'll kill'em. while i love bugs, caterpillars, bees etc. and they're always welcome. then, it depends on what insects.

Re: Insects

Kind of like the reason we only eat ugly animals but not cute ones. Most people have no problem with butterflys, but roaches? Ick.

Re: Insects

butterflys are not disease infested, taking over your house, danger to neighborhoods, kind of a bug.

so ummm yeah there is a difference.

If baby seal meat tasted good I would eat it.. I am a equal oppurtunity eater..

We didnt spend millions of years to become the highest on the food chain for nothing..

but back on topic..

I would smash a bug with no remorse if its in my home, if its not then what do I care its outside.

Re: Insects

Yes, killing a roach certainly protects your home, makes your neighborhood safer, and eliminates disease I kill them if they are in my home too IC, but not for health and sanitation reasons, just because they are ugly. BTW, baby seal meat is divine.

Re: Insects

I don't kill anything! (unless it's a black widow in my house)

Bugs are our friends.

In fact....I have a pet cricket. He's sitting right here watchin me type and churping Lol...it follows me around like a puppy dog or something. I saved him from the wash basin and I haven't been able to get rid of him since I really enjoy the churping. It's quite soothing.

Anyone know how long crickets live?? It's been like 3 months now and he's still going strong. And yes.....I'll be sad when he finally passes on

Wow! That's so cool, I saved a baby praying mantis before, it's so cute, but it never did follow me
