Re: Is Dean using Dimebag Darrells name on inferior guitars?
FWIW, Dime's original ML was NOT a special hand-made guitar, he won it in a contest.
Older Deans are pretty good, a friend of mine has a black mid-eighties ML (probably a lot like Dime's) & it's as good as either of my RGs. All the newer Deans seem to suck though. (Except maybe the more-expensive Mustaine sigs. I've played a few of those that were OK.)
Trivium dropped Dean due to the poor quality of their signature guitars a little over a year ago. They'd find just horrible guitars in stores that were nowhere near the quality of similarly-priced guitars from other companies. Now I believe they're with Gibson and Jackson, for whatever that's worth.
My own Dean issue is: I wanted a cheap acoustic for gigs & thought the V-coustic was so ridiculous, I had to get one. I played a few at various stores & ordered one online for $150 with gigbag (couldn't find a white one locally, and I HAD to have a white one. Flashbacks of Priest & The Scorpions, y'know...). It arrived with loosened strings that left HUGE dents in the frets the whole length of the fretboard in an "S" pattern (I guess someone stacked anvils on it during shipping LOL). I sent that one back & got another that had better frets (still not GOOD though) but the bridge was so poorly attached that it popped off while I was tuning it (to e-flat, ffs!). Sent that back & the next one had fret damage too. Then I realized the frets were taller than (and nowhere near as polished as) the ones I played at the stores. I was told later that the techs are doing "quickie fret jobs" (whatever that means) in the stores just to be able to sell the things. So I leveled the frets with a large fine hone-stone (after setting the neck flat - it came with so much relief, you could just about shoot arrows with it), crowned them, dressed the ends, & buffed the crap out of the whole fretboard on a buffing wheel, got the online store to refund 1/2 the money, & now I have the best-playing V-coustic ever! LOL. Not bad for $75 & about 3 hours of work, I think. And it gets quite a reaction when I play out with it. Still has the ugly headstock though...

I find it irritating that dean are releasing guitar after guitar in the name of a dead man. It's as though they're using his death to sell guitars. Also I hear that they're releasing a new Dime amp that captures the dime sound, which I think is ridiculous given that you can still buy the amps dime used (including the one he was endorsing at the time of his death). STOP USING DIMES NAME TO SELL STUFF.

I thought Krank made an amp that essentially already 'was' his sig amp, not to mention you can just buy the model of Randall that actually used.

While I have known that for a while I have only just realized how ironic that really is (at least with Gibson).

Re: Is Dean using Dimebag Darrells name on inferior guitars?
I tried one once when I was 16. Oh, what a sad day it was. The action was insanely high, the neck was massive, and it felt like the only good thing about the guitar was the paint job. The price tag said $600.
I learned that if it's an Artist model it's probably going to cost $1,000+ for a version that's not made of plywood. I understand why they make cheap more affordable versions, but if Dimebag himself wouldn't play it, then his name shouldn't be on it.

Right now, Dean guitars seem to be garbage. They just don't care about the details that make a quality instrument.

Re: Is Dean using Dimebag Darrells name on inferior guitars?
I have a Korean Dean explorer, and it's an awesome guitar. I'm sure some of their instruments aren't great, but I doubt everyone just posting up that all their stuff is crap have actually spent any time with one. Any guitar pulled off a hangar in a store can play like crap - that's on the store and lack of a decent setup. My Black Gold Z is one of the two best explorers I've ever played.

Re: Is Dean using Dimebag Darrells name on inferior guitars?
I remember reading somewhere that Dime hated 7 strings, so that 7 string razorback is a little much. So, they do go overboard with Dime's name sometimes. It's pretty easy to put a deadman's name on anything.

Re: Is Dean using Dimebag Darrells name on inferior guitars?
Everyone's hating on Deans because more often than not they are garbage.
Who cares if Dean is still selling Dime guitars. They probably have the family's blessing and it's no different than any other signature guitar.
People here complain that they can only get a Jem in two colors, but they also complain that the Dime guitar is available in colors he never used.
Does Vai use the 333 or 555 or 505? Who's to say if Dime didn't die these guitars wouldn't still be made? Dean was a dying company until Pantera came around, it's only fitting that Dean still make Dime guitars. Jackson still makes Rhoads' guitars, Gibson still makes Les Pauls.

Are they kidding? They are really going to try and sell these guitars with Dimebag Darrells name on them for that much money?
When these guitars first came out, i was excited beyond compare, I could not wait to play one. Since then it has been dissapointment after dissapointment. Usually when you convince yourself something is going to be amazing, it is. Not in this case. The newer Razorback bolt-ons are no exception. I dont' know what the neck is really made of, but I would guess that if one cut it apart, it would reveal a particle board core. Every single DBD Dean I have played has been horrible. This is from 3 different stores and many different models. This all leads me to believe that Dean is using Dime's name to make a huge amount of money off of his untimely death and immense rise in popularity.
Rant over.
