Is Steve Vai living in his own world?

A.K.A. is Steve Vai slipping up his own bum-crack?

I've loved Steve Vai for years, since I was about 10 actually, but recently he just seems to be far more egotistical and he's coming out with some crazy ideas (or at least, endorsing them.)

Maybe it's just me, but the guy is just beginning to make me think he's becoming a bit of a parody of some sort. Don't get me wrong, I love his playing, albums, Jem guitars, etc. but something is just not right.

Anyone agree or disagree? Discuss if you wish

OK Mod hat on first of all.

DO NOT LET THIS THREAD BECOME A FLAME.

Mod hat off.

I think Steve is enjoying the luxury of eccentricity that comes with wealth, fame and respect. He has a reputation for being a bit "out there" anyway, I think he's now securely in the position to capitalise on that.

However... That new trem looks stupid, what actually does it do that an Edge doesn't?

Yeah I totally agree. This isn't to slander the guys abilities or accomplishments because at the end of the day he's still a legend and I'm still a fan...

But seriously, WTF?

Re: Is Steve Vai living in his own world?

well i assume you don't mean the true temp fret idea as that's certainly not crazy.

and this new bridge probably isn't either, it just looks ugly..

keep in mind..
1. i don't see anyone certain that this is the new production bridge and not something he's experimenting on..
2. if this is the bridge, remember it will be modified and will look nicer than that main pic that surfaced. in the info and pics already you can see he will not have that big ugly whammy bar, it will be ibanez like. and other changes seem to be going on.. rounded saddles, smaller rear bar thing length etc and it'll probably continue to be refined..

Re: Is Steve Vai living in his own world?

far be it for a rock star to be egotistical. I think Steve is handeling his fame quite well. he is a family man, who has a flare for the dramatic and flashy. He is not a huge druggy, he is just an accomplished musician, and being accomplished gives you confidence and allows you to move away from the norm and experiment with music the way he wants.

If you think Vai is not normal, maybe you should check out the lead singer from the baby shambles. That guy was photographed injecting a groupie with Heroin. Now that guy is a moron.

Vai rocks and even if you don't like his style anymore, he gets my respect for always making music he likes and not caring what record labels or trends want.

He's a very lucky and hard working musician...

Yeah Pete Doherty is a douche.

Where did I say I didn't like his style? I'm talking personality-wise here. Once upon a time he seemed very grounded even though he's a rockstar, but in the past year or so each and every interview I've seen him in has given me mixed messages/feelings towards the guy. And if you re-read what was put, I never ONCE disrespected the guy, nor would I

Let's not forget that 'innovation' is what got Steve into our lives in the first place.

In order to stay pertinent in today's musical world one does not rest on one's laurels. One constantly evolves and pushes the envelope - some of which we like and some we don't -depending on taste.

I'll continue to let Vai drive the bus - I have really loved the ride so far....
...how about you?

Steve Vai is a great guy,no doubt about that.
Asfar as his music goes,I used to be a huge fan back in the day,but I think since Fire Garden I've gone off his work and havnt enjoyed his albums one bit and find them unlistenable.
So to answer the question musically he has disappeared up his arse and it no longer says anything to me.

Re: Is Steve Vai living in his own world?

Hell no! Seeing guys like Vai, Satch, and PG do their own thing (the way they want to) is rather inspiring. Besides, if we were on the 4th version of "Fire Garden" we'd probably be like "Ugh,this again!" The symphony thing was cool. I'm a bit pissed the tour didn't come to my town but oh well.
Hopefully, Steve will stay on Zappa Plays Zappa if they do it again. That was amazingly cool! Or a Satch, Vai, PG G3!!!
I'm looking forward to the next Real Illusions disc too. I think those who aren't into Frank, Holdsworth, or Beck don't realize how much they figure into Steve's music.
Anywho...my $.02.
