Question

LCD pc monitors - 19" regular or Widescreen?

I'm shopping for a new computer monitor. The 19" and 20" widescreens look nice but they are no taller than a regular 17" monitor. Is the widescreen option worth it? Does anyone here use a widescreen computer monitor? What do you like about it? I'll be using mine for interent, photo editing and maybe some minor gaming once in a while.

So whats better? 19" regular screen or 19" widescreen.

Re: LCD pc monitors - 19" regular or Widescreen?

here is a matrix i created recently, as i'm shopping monitors myself for home and work.

note the RESOLUTION and actual VIEWING SCREEN DIMENSIONS .. useful to compare to existing monitors. the sort is by actual viewing HEIGHT.

i would always go wide unless you have specific reasons not to, and/or your vision is poor where a 19" LCD 4x3 format would give large fonts. i'd also go 20" wide over 19" wide for resolution bump, but if $$$ is an issue 19w" is great too. i'll be typing on one at lunchtime ... glen

Code:
17" CRT: 1024x 768 12.7" wide x 9.5" height; 17" diagonal
19" Wide 1440x 900 16.1" wide x 10.0" height; 19" diagonal
17" 4x3: 1280x1024 13.3" wide x 10.6" height; 17" diagonal
19" CRT: 1024x 768 14.3" wide x 10.7" height; 19" diagonal
20" wide: 1680x1050 17.1" wide x 10.7" height; 20" diagonal
22" wide: 1680x1050 18.7" wide x 11.7" height; 22" diagonal
19" 4x3: 1280x1024 14.8" wide x 11.9" height; 19" diagonal
24" wide: 1920x1200 19.5" wide x 12.2" height; 24" diagonal

If you don't need DVI, here is a good deal on a View Sonic.

I prefer Dell monitors myself, and you can catch a deal on them if you try.

Watch this page daily for deals and be ready to buy when they come up.

yup, alot of non-DVI 19w" sales (closeouts) can be found now.

dell has some on sale and also factory refurbs now for all sizes. I myself wouldn't pay more for similarly equipped Dell but i'm very close to ordering the 24" 2407.... glen

Wow, 32" would be wicked. Over my budget anyway though. I'll be looking at the 19 and 20" models that are going on sale before X-mass.

FYI - that 32" is 1366x768 so it's really 99% for TV and 1% for web browsing from teh couch.... totall useless for a computer monitor... glen

Definitely go for the 2407, I have it's older brother, the 2405 and it's great. I'm considering getting a second monitor - the 2407 or 3007 to go with my 2405 although the 3007 would require a video card upgrade. Decisions, decisions.

I just hook up my PC to the LCD TV. It kills two birds with one stone. The PC sits behind the TV. Everything else (wireless router, printer, etc) sits in the closet. I can control everything via wireless mouse and keyboard.

Re: LCD pc monitors - 19" regular or Widescreen?

I just picked this up courtesy of bonus rewards from my CC
http://gateway.com/programs/widescre...overview.shtml

Really nice desktop monitor that has PIP (picture in picture) use and 1:1 1920x1080p pixel mapping option for HDTV and video playback (my home theatre projector looks alot better than any direct view LCD/plama, any size or resolution so keep that in perspective).

That is real nice, and a setup you'll find more popular for casual PC use for sure as 720p, 1080p or higher native panels become larger and cheaper... glen
