There's no such thing is overrated guitarist.
Think about Nirvana.
Put Vai there...........or Satch or Malmsteen etc.
See the point?
Nirvana needed a crap guitarist to play crap music, it didn't need an awesome player.
Think about U2.
The majority of players if were in U2 would play pentatonic licks, nothing more.The Edge created something different, something personal that's his signature and really made U2 stood up from other pop bands with penta players with no personality.
Does U2 need Vai?
Or Satch or Malmsteen etc?
NO.
There's no law like "to be a good guitarist we all have to play like Vai/Satch/Malmsteen etc".
To be a good player we have to play what our bands need and add our personality/talent.
All of them have their own places, when you compare them, you're putting them in the same place which is dumb

Me.

My friends think I'm great. My close friend said I was up there with Satch and Vai.

All I have are some fast Death Metal riffs, some slower melodic riffs, a couple arpeggio's and some scales that I cant even play very fast. And I can't write a quality shred solo to save my life.

I'm better than the average Deathcore guitarist (who isn't?) but I'll NEVER be as good as Satch and Vai.

hahahah...ive seen guitarst who can shred and play music like yjm and vai end up not making much money playing music and few guitarist who plays mostly pentatonic phrase lack of speed and technique earn tons of money playing in a band....the important things what you want in playing guitar and music in life...if you want to earn a living playing guitar in a band then you have to be relevant in the music market....or nobody will care much about your playing....slash might be overrated as a guitarist in terms of technical skill and speed but he plays what is right...he's more popular than paul gilbert or vai in the world and his fans are not just musicians or guitarist but ordinary ppl who listen to his music...

That's what I thought about Hendrix after my first 2 yrs of playing. However, after discovering guys like McLaughlin, Di Meola and Benson, I STILL can't do all their stuff after a couple or three decades!
