Neck finish?

I was just wondering which kind of finish you prefer on the back of your guitar neck?

I like gloss as satin just makes my hand feel strange as I slide up and down the neck. It looks cool, though. But, I really don't like the feel.

I voted "oil", and by that I mean Tru Oil and wax.

Yeah, I've just put 'Oiled' in the poll and not all the different kinds. Like tung oil and such. I figured I'd probably forget to include some of them anyway, so...

Does oil compare to satin or gloss in any way? Or is it something completely different?

an oil finish feels like raw wood , but provides some protection from staining and such. For me, its one of the first things i want to do to a neck, because the clear coat feels like my hand drags against it. Oiled feels very slick and dry.

I"m loving the satin finish on my RG20th, and I haven't tried an oiled neck for a decent amount of time so I'll go with the Satin.

That's interesting. I don't think an oiled neck would be for me.

Aesthetically it's nice, though. Didn't the JEMBSB also have an oiled neck? It looks very beautiful.

That's interesting. I'm surprised by the popularity of the oil.

Oiled all the way. I really consider a heavily glossed neck to be a turnoff.

im with the crowd on this mate.
I cant stand the sticky gloss finishes on guitar necks..
ive tried danish oil, tru oil, tung oil and raw and they are all better then gloss for me.

I'm amazed by this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't 9 out of 10 guitars either glossy or satin? Aren't oiled necks relatively rare?

A nicely done satin finish is pretty close to an oiled neck, though. My 7VWH has a satin finished neck, and that neck is as close to perfect (for me anyway) as you get in an assembly line guitar.

Satin necks don't really bother me that much, but it is not really a hassle to remove the gloss and apply 2-3 coats of Tru Oil.

I know Ernie Ball and Charvel offer oil and wax finishes, but I don't know who else might.
