Need an opinion...Berklee audition comin up!
As some of you may know, I transcribed a solo by Greg Howe, "Crack It Way Open" (Yes, it's fusion, get over it) off of his Extraction album (excellent) over the summer as my audition piece to Berklee College of Music's Guitar Sessions summer program. This 2 minute solo earned me a $12,000 4 year renewable scholarship to the college. Also excellent.
That was the past. Here's the present.
I've decided that, for my official audition for entrance to the college (though it's lookin' pretty solid judging that 6 people, including me, out of nearly 600 at the summer program were awarded scholarships) on December 14 that I'm going to play the rest of the song. I've transcribed all of that. Except for one part...obviously, Victor Wooten's bass solo!
During his solo, which is only 45 seconds long, Greg just sort of single-note comps....meaning he puts little accents in some places, but the solo is pretty much without any guitar. I have a choice to make, because I don't want to sit and listen to a bass solo for 45 seconds. That'd just be downright awkward.
First off, I can't comp chords. It's a "one chord vamp", I guess, though Victor is just strolling over nothing. This song is a trio song. And also, the rhythm doesn't consititute comping.
So, do I.....
1) Sit there.
2) Splice out the bass solo (meanining burn a copy of the song with the bass solo taken out)
3) Transcribe the solo and play it!
I myself am quite fond of the 3rd option. A Victor Wooten bass solo, slaps included, on the guitar would be pretty sick. I just don't know what the judges would think. So I need an opinion and/or any other options I left out. Thanks all!

I vote for option 2, and if anyone knows the song and asks where the bass solos is/why did you take out, give em your reasoning and if they don't like it then oh well

You should just bring in a bass as well, and swap 'em when the solo comes up. Or just go for option 3 . . . .

Be careful of #2 -that could be taken the wrong way. I was a jazz piano major and one of my audition pieces was 'Giant Steps' by John Coltrane: very popular and considered a cornerstone in jazz music.
I changed the arrangement around to fit my time limitation and got penalized for leaving parts out. Don't make the same mistake I did - the judges take this stuff far more seriously than you may think -especially at Berklee. Good luck - PRACTICE!

Hm, that seems a little harsh. I mean they give you a specific time limit and you want to do your own rendition of something within that time limit and they penalize you for creative differences? Harsh.
I guess #3 is your best bet now, or have a very talented bassist come with you for just that little bit; however thats a tad extreme.

Take option 2. If they ask you why you left out the bass part, simply tell them with a bernie mac-like demeanor, that last time you checked, it was a GUITAR-based audition and that you're not a bass player. If they keep harassing you, tell them to buy the cd and listen to Victor playing the bass part.
Any a$$h0le can sit there and critique someone but, the bottom line is that if you're being given a predetermined amount of time to play YOUR rendition of a song, then let it be and hold your head high. What's the worst that could possibly happen? You don't get the scholarship? Big whoop. There are worst things in the world. If you don't get a scholarship to go to Berklee, it doesn't mean you shouldn't go. I'm sure they got financial aid.

Re: Need an opinion...Berklee audition comin up!
jb4674: I already have a scholarship. $12,000. This is just to bump it up even more, maybe even up to full tuition.
Sitting out is definitely not an option, I've already decided that. I started transcribing the bass solo today, and I think I can play it no problem, even with some of the slaps toward the end. I think I'm gonna go that way. If I know my bassists, they really like it when guitarists recognize the awesomeness of the bass and would probably love to see a guitarist actually play a bass solo, slaps included. Last audition, I had an older version of Victor Wooten critique me, so maybe I'll luck out again and get him. But either way, any instrumentalist would think it's cool to see a guitarist playing a bass solo.
