Re: Notebook Bang For Your Buck

gateway man, gateway has a few models with 2 gigs of ram and new core 2 duo cpus at prices below most other companies that only offer 1 gig of ram and otherwise similar specs. Now if you are saying well I can buy another stick of ram for cheap that isn't exactly right, laptop ram is expensive compared to regular pc ram, not to mention that fact that you would probably have to buy twice as much to get up to 2 gigs because all your slots are probably full from the factory so you would have to ditch your old ram instead of just adding more.

Re: Notebook Bang For Your Buck

I've been using a Lenovo 3000 N100 with the following upgrades:
* 1.5GB of RAM
* Hitachi Travelstar 100GB 7200RPM HDD
* Tapco Link.USB(USB Soundcard)
* 500GB Seagate SATA in a Vantec NexStar3 enclosure
* Behringer FCB1010 connected via a Yamaha USB MIDI interface
* M-Audio Xsession Pro MIDI Controller

I use it to run Guitar Rig2, Ableton Live & Cubase. Been Using this setup for small performances & production at home. I would recommend this to anyone else without a moments hesitation!!

Cheers!!

I also bought a Dell 1501 recently for my younger brother & it is a great machine for the money(If u run XP instead of the Vista that is preinstalled)

Not to piss on your parade, but I'd vote against Toshiba. I own one, as well as most of my friends, and while the power/money is good, the cooling systems in these things are s***. Power is nice, but it's also nice to have a computer that can run for six hours without kicking the bucket.

Having seen this as a widespread problem in their machines, I won't be going back to them until I see something showing drastic improvement from them in that area.

Sorry for the delay in replying fettouhi, been travelling!!

The dell was able to run the basic features of vista but not the whole Eye Candy stuff, the games ran much better on XP in the same comp. If you want a vista machine with all the bells & whistles then u should wait a little while.

Cheers!

I think Dell's are alright. The price is right and the people I know who own them have not had any problems. I'm not saying a power gamer should buy a Dell but for most they are fine IMHO.

Re: Notebook Bang For Your Buck

for sure. plus Vista Aero compatability is dependant on video card. if the older/cheaper $399 dell notebooks (which are great bargain with warranty) can't run Aero like a PC with $399 dedicated video card (but still run vista w/ 1GB ram) who really has the right to complain.

ps - windows vista 90-day report card. note mac, xp and vista

it's nice to hear someone say that. i just bought a dell 1501 and it shoud be here tomorrow. Vista Premium comes loaded on it and i upgraded the processor, the memory and the drive. i also ordered a 4 port USB hub.
some music/video production but mostly internet and business purposes is really all i need it for.
i don't know alot about computers so you guys got me a little worried there.
