I voted clapton, mostly because everyone will vote for SSV, so i wanted to do something different
On a serious note, i voted EC, because, even though he is at the bottom of that list techniquewise, i can relate to his (earlier) music the most...
And to be honest i think posting polls like this doesn't make any sense, because - yes, you guessed right, "they are all different, you can't compare"...
, and at best they would just result in a big disagreement...A better poll would be, for example: "which of these players has a better vibrato and why?"

Steve Vai
, no contest.
Maybe some of the others did it earlier, but he does it better.

Shred....Man I am impressed you caught that so fast.
I did this poll late last night, I wanted to see if anyone would notice...
It didn't take long.

LOL these polls always make me laugh
Sure there's a definitive answer ro who each of us as an indivudual likes best, but I still maintain that music is an artform not a competition.
Folks who ask the question "who is BEST?" always come off looking rather juvenile imho.
I reckon, GuitarWizard, that you should have asked your revised question as your poll title. 'Who do you like best??' I think there's definately a right answer to that one

let's see:
Hendrix: good, but I don't think he's all people make him out to be. He was a guitar god in the 60's, but I don't think that holds true today (I still give respect to the dude for what he was back in the day).
Clapton: not bad, he had some good stuff, but I've never heard anything that knocked me head over heels.
EVH: badass, but missing the "emotion" bit that would have won it.
Randy: here we go.... he's definately got sick chops, and impressive playing, but it never did anything for me. The solo's were technical enough, but I never heard one I enjoyed. I dunno. He's good, but his stuff never really got to me.
SRV: da man. Emotion all over the place, great guitar work, made me listen to the blues (which I never did before I heard him). IMO, he probably could have put a little more "rock" into his work, but unfortunately...
SSV: SRV, but a whole lot cooler. Whether or not the emotion's there is debatable, but he simply rocks, and does whatever the hell he wants, regardless of what anyone else says. Narrowly beats SRV (and he's the one I voted for).
Just my $.02

Jono,
Anyone that can't piece together a statement like "Who is best" in a poll that is based solely on opinion as a matter of your own personal choice comes off a juvenile to me.
You can't judge feel.
And I really don't think you can judge technique.
Some people may say something like "Vai is more technical than Clapton"........in some cases sure....but as a blues player??....PLEASE!!
Eric would play 3 notes over a "Five Long Years" backbeat that would blow Vai of the stage.
Meanwhile, during a Love of God type song, Vai would rock....
NOW....compare the 2....would the raw grit, tone to the bone of Clapton make you cream your jeans.....or did you have to strap on a diaper for Mr. Vai?????
There is your answer.
There is no wrong answer......don't get pissy, or your panies in a bunch....of these guys.....which one does it for you the most????
So simple, it defies desciption.

The best guitarist............
hm..........
best at what?
I would say Mr Clapton and just leave it at that.
this is not me having a go at anyone or anything like that but please spend $10 on an album called John Mayall's Bluesbrakers with
Eric Clapton
(1966) and see the light.

List in order your FAVORITE to LEAST FAVORITE player from above.

1.Vai
2.Rhoads
3.
Van Halen
4.Clapton
5.Hendrix
I'm kind of a speed guy- shred makes me cream. I like blues, and really haven't heard enough of SRV to make a decision, so i didnt put him on. Hendrix i love-along with satriani these are my 5 favourite guitarists, so being last doesnt mean i dont like him!
Just hearing the soloing on ice#9 or cowboys from hell, or anything off 1919 eternal makes me feel all lovely inside

As this is 'Jemsite', it is not really surprising to see Stevie out front.......
....realistically though (and SSV is my fave player), the most influential guitarists out of the list above are without doubt Jimi & EVH
I don't know the age group of the majority of the folks on this site - but I'm sure that some of the guys who can remember back to the eighties agree that no one person revolutionised the guitar as much as EVH....
