Re: One Finger Power chords.....

now that i have my universe, it's not really necessary anymore, but you can get some serious riffage going on a drop d tuning.

i never really used it much in the first place though.

Re: One Finger Power chords.....

I love it. Drop-d tuning rules. It just sounds so powerful. I love it. And when you tune all the strings down one whole note, it sounds terrific. Very powerful. And beautiful. Also when you play clean. Super cool.

Now if only Ibanez was to make a production model of this thing:

Then I would have the perfect guitar to have in drop-d tuning all the time!

Kind regards,

Fair enough, but for what it's worth, an Am sweep on drop-A on a seven string looks like this:

Code:
E|-------------------------12h17p12-------------------------|
B|----------------------13----------13----------------------|
G|-------------------14----------------14-------------------|
D|----------------14----------------------14----------------|
A|----------12h15----------------------------15p12----------|
E|-------12----------------------------------------12-------|
A|-12h15----------------------------------------------15p12-|
Personally, I think any tuning is just as limiting as the guy playing it - I've heard things just as uncreative in standard E as I have in drop-D, and vice versa. I don't understand how dropping the D to C in standard D could be any "more" creative than drop-D from standard, since it's the same interval relation from string to string - I see no imaginable way how being a whole step lower than you might otherwise be somehow makes your playing more "creative."

Personally, I play mostly in standard because I'm too lazy to drop-tune most of the time. Does this mean my playing is more creative for it? Hardly, in fact you've got a better case arguing the exact opposite.

I always like to have a few guitars laying around set up in a few different tunings. You never know what mood you might be in.

Oops.. I clicked the wrong choice.

When someone just drops the E to a D, that's PATHETIC.

But when you experiment.. I like.

That's a tad harsh, Katrina. There are some really beautiful things written in drop-D, not just the usual power-chord chugging.

Really? Not just a regular X5 with a low 5th?

Friends by Joe S. is in drop D. Lots of songs without riffing use drop tunings. There is no sense in tuning the "hardest possible way". If a different tuning make things easier to play, why not retune?

That's right. Joe Satriani uses it for a lot of drop-d tuned stuff. That's why it would be cool to me to have it, and have it in that tuning.

Just like this one:
