Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

Spencer, your right about EJ not being a jazz player. He incorporates it into his music.
On his instructional video, he explains that Wes Montgomery is his main influence for jazz and "East Wes" shows it. "Rain" also.

To each his own. Yeah, EJ is too perfect sounding but he is my favorite guitarist as far as technique, tone and style goes.

And yeah, he's 19 in that video. Glad y'all liked it.

Tks all so far for keeping this thread alive.

Spencer, I agree we can't really compare both Jazz cats and Rockers together, but it is fun to discuss both in the same breath.

Too bad classical guitarist (no, yngwie dun count) dun play electric guitars, if not, I wld love to see Classical vs Jazz vs Rock. That wld be something.

Also, Manhattan by Eric Johnson, which is one of my fav's, is also Wes Montgomery influenced.

Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

Jazz players definitely have the chops, they just express themselves differently. Frank Gambale is probably my favorite jazz player.

Don't forget about Joe Pass!!

lloop is right about those chord progressions, wickedly insane!

Allan Holdsworth's "Lanyard Loop", All Night Wrong, Favored Nations is amazing.

Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

listen to "Mark Varney Project" - Truth in shredding.

A collaboration b/w Holdsworth & Gambale, its pretty cool since both were suppose to jam but never actually met up, so one recorded his part & pass it to the other to fill-in.

Lazy, lol.

The music's OK, but the title is just horrible...

I recommend everyone to pick up Holsworth's "16 Men of Tain"...

I would second that, although I think 'Secrets' is his ultimate solo album....

Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

Road Games is Holdsworths best album in my opinion. Secrets is amazing and 16 men of tain is really amazing. Metal Fatigue is good too and his new live cd All Night Wrong is crazy. Hes sweet live. One of my fav guitarists.

Yeah, Al Di Meola. Awesome. Is that Gambale/Holdsworth worth picking up?

Well, I dun know if there r other Gambale/Holdsworth collaboration(?), but if this is the only album there is, it might be worth ur while if U're a fan. Its a good disc to hear the contrast between the 2.

However, since both recorded their licks seperately, there is no spontanity(sp) between the trading thats going on, unlike in a live setting. But still a worthwhile album IMO.

Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

I would say it's more worth it to get something better by either of the two. That MVP album has lots of ripping guitar, but overall it's not the optimal setting for either of them.

Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

yea, there is a second collaboration. it has its charm if youre lookin for licks and no musical interplay and substance. but if you want MUSIC then theres far better places to look amongst the two musician's libraries of recordings.

and what is everyone's boner over al dimeola. i get it, hes fast. great. now what? oh thats it? next...oh dimeola on acoustic? wow. fast. strumming pseudo-flamenco stuff. yawn...

john mclaughlin, early santana, larry coryell and bill connors ripped dimeola apart, end of story. and thats not even considering the more modern fusion guys like scott henderson and wayne krantz who are both a million times the player that dimeola ever was.

Re: Rock vs Jazz virtuosos

Meola plays Piazzolla was a pretty good album

I re-listened to the compilation album I have, and I don't really see in Aeolian Al what I did earlier. He does have his moments though...

Krantz is a great player though, I should really check out some stuff by him. My favourite from the newer fusion guys is currently Nguyen Le.
