Most of the 'shred' genre takes place within metal. Some of the earliest bands that soloed in such a way as to popularize shredding are considered heavy metal, such as black sabbath, iron maiden, Judas Priest and lots of thrash bands. Even a lot instrumental rock is far more closely related with metal than real 'Rock'. Shredders such as Yngwie Malmsteen are always found in the 'metal' section of music stores, and so on. Not to mention that the overwhelming majority of Ibanez guitars belong to people who play metal. How many discussions here are about the offspring (their lead guitarist having a signature production line with ibanez) or Stanley Jordan's latest works? NONE.
The term 'heavy metal' band does not instantly mean every song has to be downtuned and played really fast with lots of palm muting with a singer that either sounds like a castrato or a grizzly bear. I'd personally consider the overall metal genre to be the one with the widest and most varied sound. All you have to do is look at its ridiculous amount of subgenres and the amount of arguments that are about a certain bands specific subgenre that they fit in. Most other genres such as rap, punk, jazz, pop, etc can probably have their sound summed up in no more than 3 or 4 songs. Try that with metal and no matter what you do you will leave out massive gaps of the scene.
So yeah, more or less this forum IS just about metal :P

Re: steve vai vs. paul gilbert
I think this thread should be closed and a new "Rant Here" thread should be opened. Every week, a new "kicker topic" should be started by the mods, similar to Vai vs Gilbert. After one week, it gets closed, regardless, and a new one gets opened by one of the mods.
Muffin's post could be a good kicker - what IS metal? To make it more antagonistic, what is GOOD metal ("nosiree officer, I swear i don't know what started the fight")

Dexter's guitars are better than Noodles
And Jazz has nearly as many sub-genres as Metal. Smooth Jazz sounds nothing like Hardbop.

+1 to LonePhantom.
Having disagreements is completely fine when it comes to this board, but there's no need to insult each other.
To be honest there is very little reason to use bold, underlines, etc here either.

The bold and underlined thing is absolutely a bit ridiculous! Let's just all concede that Metalbucker is more metal than any of us! I'm good with not even being metal anymore... My love of Vai has nothing to even do with metal. Besides most of the bands I dig are pop metal 80's guys anyway...Which on the METAL scale is like medium weight tin...
Lone Phantom-He's a new guy trying to impress...Pay him no mind at all bro...

Re: steve vai vs. paul gilbert
New Guys,
If your purpose here is to insult other members you are going to get an infraction. Do it again after that, and you are banned, take it on the road. There's a difference between disagreeing and simply being disagreeable.
