Cool

The Jemsite Pickup Club

Seems like there may be some interest in this, so lets see...

I know theres tons on "what pickups sound good in this" threads, god, too many really, I think if Glen deleted them all half the forum would be gone, so this might help us!

So welcome to Pickup Club, your way of trying out as many pickups as you like without buying each and every one of them, find something you love? Keep it no questions asked. MadRyan started swishing around some Ideas, so I came up with applying the rules of a World of Warcraft guild bank that I used to run, and it actually seems to work, for this application.

First Rule and main rule of Pickup Club:

****To Join, you must send in 1 pickup, this is your membership cost and will grant you access to start swapping with the bank inventory, you do not get a pickup back with this initial pickup, it is now the banks pickup.. This is the big rule and the rule that can never change, it allows the inventory to never deplete. This is a life long membership cost.****

a. Also to be a member, you must be in good standing with Jemsite and be a forum member, thats all, no Banned members. Your time on the forum, number of feedback ratings and post count does not matter as long as you follow the First Rule of Pickup Club.

All other rules.

1. No generic pickups, only name brand. No V series, no EMG selects, no Duncan Designed, no "no name mysteries", no matter how good you think it sounds. Acceptable pickups are DiMarzio, Duncan and other Boutiques like Bareknuckles. No actives at this time, no single coils at this time. If this starts working, 7 string pickups my be the first to be added, but 6 string only for now.

2. When swapping, the bank considers all pickups equal, no matter there street value or color, it will be a 1:1 swap period.

3. Pickups must have a minimum of 5 inches of lead and the resistance on both coils test within the parameters of the listed output. This applies to both incoming and outgoing pickups. The bank will refuse pickups with leads shorter than 5".

4. Pickups must be free of any major damage, or corrosion. Light scratches and scuff marks are acceptable, for this is an inevitable issue for all pickups.

5. If you want a pickup from the bank, you must pay shipping both ways, shipping in the con US should be no more than $5 each way. International welcome, but remember, your paying the postage, I know you guys over the pond have a hard time getting DiMarzio's so heres your chance to try them all out. If this becomes super popular I'm sure we can open a bank over there too.

6. To start the swap, you first must e-mail the Pickup Cashier with what pickup your sending in and what pickup you want. This will put a swap hold for 5-7 business days (depending on your location) on that pickup in the bank to await the arrival of yours and not allow anyone else from getting that pickup or putting a swap hold on it. Your pickup your sending in will not be listed on the Bank Register until the Pickup Casher clears it.

7. The bank is God, it has the right to refuse pickups based on inventory, if theres 6 Evo's and 1 TZ in stock, we can refuse your Evo your trying to trade in for the TZ. The bank could also sell off extra pickups if the inventory is high, and using that money to exclusively purchase other pickups to keep the inventory fresh with different pickups. The bank will always accept donations of free pickups and money to go towards buying more pickups.

Feedback wanted!! Idea's wanted!!

Thumbs up

Re: The Jemsite Pickup Club

I've been thinking about this all day now, ever since I read the original thread this morning.

I might give the idea a try and might even put up a website.

Hope you don't mind. Not meant to steal your idea but it's great.

I'm in Europe (The Netherlands).

Thats fine if you want to be the European counterpart. Although I think very active forum members with a high trader rating should be the bank.

Yeah that would be totally awsome.

Gonna think about it some more (and probably start building a site soon)

sounds very interesting.... still debating whether to "donate" my Evo to the bank but I have no desire in getting another pickup as of late; unless I get another axe that calls for a p/u upgrade

Re: The Jemsite Pickup Club

So riddle me this, caped crusader:
The pickups are on loan only?
This is just to try before you buy?
If that is the case, sorry to say, but it's pointless.
Dimarzio has a 30 day exchange policy that if you're not happy, you can exchange it for another. Granted I'm not sure about Bare Knuckle or SD but I'd wager it is a similar policy at any of the other major manufacturers.

Re: The Jemsite Pickup Club

no not loan, keep it if you like it. Its a 1:1 swap for any other pickup in the bank, Dimarzio for Duncan or whatever.

Say for example this is the Bank Inventory

DiMarzio:

Super II x1
Evo x2
Evo II x1
X2n x1

Duncan:

59' x1
GL Demon x1

Your guitar has a Fred, but you don't like it and want to try a Evo, take it out, send it to the bank and we send you whatever you want in the inventory as long as the Fred matches the 5" lead rule, damage rule and is in perfect working order. No 30 day thing, we dont care if your Fred is a few years old, you like the Evo, keep it.

Only In the US Mr Riddler...
in the UK its buy em and live with em !

which is why I commented on the amount of "what pups should I get" threads.....
for us UK guys the 30 day exchange policy does not exist - which is why Dimarzio are so out of order telling their US dealers not to sell to the UK....

double the cost with half the benefits - crazy !

EDIT - sorry NONE of the benefits....

Thats all well and good for you guys, actually it sucks, but that is my point about it being done here.

I will offer one bit of advice:
Go with a modular plug that all guitars involved must have installed, if nothing else for sake of the lead wire length.
Some ham fisted solderer could ruin 6" of lead and leave the pickup with an effectively useless amount of wire remaining for the next guy.

We have those options (Sorry, not to rub it in) so why come up with this elaborate scheme to buy a 60 dollar pickup that you can exchange if you don't like it?

Because after 30 days you can't exchange it (and you can only exchange those you got new with the paper work) and barely get 1/2 your money back if you sell it outright. I don't know where your coming up with "elaborate scheme", this is nothing of the sort, no ones making any money off this.

from DiMarzio

If you are a U.S. resident and you are not satisfied with the performance of your DiMarzioŽ pickup for any reason, DiMarzioŽ, Inc. will exchange it within thirty days of original purchase for any other DiMarzioŽ pickup having an equal or lesser manufacturer's suggested retail price. If you want to exchange it for a higher priced pickup, you must include the difference in the listed retail price with your exchange. Here's how to do it: Call us at (71 816-8112 any Monday through Friday between 12:00 Noon and 5:00 PM Eastern Time. We will give you a Return Authorization number and make certain you are happy with your replacement choice. The original pickup must be returned directly to DiMarzioŽ, Inc. Sales receipt or other Proof of Purchase must be included with the returned pickup. DiMarzio? will not accept any pickup which has been altered or damaged due to misuse or accident. This offer applies to U.S. residents only.

What happens to the replacement one if your not happy with that either?

kinda sucks for those who got one here in Jemsite ad's for $45 or the bay and don't like it...

Thats why theres a 5" minimum lead rule, you chop it down, its now yours, period.
