Re: The smoking ban - UK
I don't mind going elsewhere to smoke, honest. A dedicated smoking area would be preferable, but the atmosphere in pubs in the UK was unbearable before.
All in all, it's not that much of an incovenience, and the non- smokers seem happier than they have from ages.
The next step is criminalising it, and that I will have a problem with.

I agree- but now pubs smell differrent. You can often smell the musty carpets and the toilets. I guess smoke used to hide the other nasty smells.

Oh god tell me about it. The B.O. on some people is enough to kill a skunk! There is this postman that comes in our place after he's finished his rounds and because he's been walking miles he REEKS when he gets here. I just spray some air freshner and give them some deodorant, they take it in good humour
We're lucky really, we had a refurb about 2 years ago so our carpets and that aren't bad at all. Toilets though... well sh*t stinks now matter how old it is

Re: The smoking ban - UK
It's weird, it's like they can't smell themselves or something
What's worse is when you try leaving the pub, it's like 'Stars in their eyes' with all the smokers in the entrance/exit. "Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be smelling like a fag-end." Honestly I get that theme tune in my head every time I leave the building..
Dan dun dan dan daarn.. daa dan dan dan daaaaaaaaaa.......

Re: The smoking ban - UK
I disagree. Call me selfish but standing outside in the rain having a smoke is a pain in the ass. Unfortunately I got addicted to cigarettes at a young age(12) and I need to smoke every half an hour, I seem to spend more time outside these days
I think it definitely has its advantages though, if I never smoked I would be all for it.

Because criminalising lethal and addictive drugs is a bad thing...?
I would have a problem because of the huge drop in tax revenue, but from a moral and, indeed, legal point of view, the criminalisation of tobacco is completely justifiable.
A drugs officer in the police once told me that if tobacco were discovered today, it would be class A.

Re: The smoking ban - UK
I stumbled on an article recently while looking up scientific articles for a paper I was writing - this article pretty much summed up a body of evidence that cigarette companies were producing defective cigarettes - that when you smoked them cellulose acetate from the filter went directly into your lungs (not minute particles - actual small fibers) - for the last 40 years and they knew about it. And covered it up. **** 'em I say.

Re: The smoking ban - UK
In Canada cigarettes are a large source of money for the goverment. They tax smokes at 50% or something like that. So we are not going to see it criminalized any time soon.

Re: The smoking ban - UK
Depends on the terms. I'm all for a smoking ban, but if it's done in the ludicrous manner of the one here in Tennessee, I'm all against it.
