Thoughts on relics?

What do you guys think of Relics? Sometimes I think they look pretty cool, but most of the time I think they look manky and like I wouldn't want to touch the things.

Not only that but the majority just reek of artificialness. Take for example Steve Vai's Evo, that is a legit relic yes? Imagine how many hours and how many shows have been played on that guitar, yet it still looks reasonable (IMHO) for the amount of time it's been played, cool. Then you get a guitar like the EVH Frankenstrat clones that look like absolute garbage, but even if it weren't for the fact that it's a custom shop guitar, you just know that somebody has sat down and thought "Right well we'll just chip it here, then sand it there.."

(Maybe a bad example actually because EVH's was actually played into that condition but you catch my drift hopefully.)

I'm not knocking the effort that goes into doing these things (and Ibanezcollector's thread has no baring on this one BTW, just coincedence.)

So what do you guys think of them?

^^
There was a poll about this before.

Anyway, I can't say I like them. I can see how some people would be interested in them, though. Like big Eric Clapton fans, who buy the blackie replica. I can see that. It would be interesting to see a relic EVO guitar. Just like Steve's with all the dings! I bet that would sell.

By the way, I voted the third option. I'm very careful with my guitars.

I'm somewhere between options 2 and 3.

Re: Thoughts on relics?

It's a little stronger wording than I would use but I voted the 2nd choice.

I don't have a problem with relics in general, or old guitars that have real wear & tear. However to me the vast majority of relics I see... including ones done by Fender are painfully obviously fake. Seeing a cool old beat up guitar is one, thing but seeing one that has obvious sanding marks, 50 of the nearly exact same dings from the same screw driver all over, the easily identifiable fake finish checking from an upsidedown can of compressed air etc are IMO lame.

In other words... if it's done right I like it, if it's obviously fake I dont.

Somewhere between 1 and 2. I don't hate them by any means, especially on Strats as I've played a few that were totally awesome. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Re: Thoughts on relics?

I guess I'm like Jim..... I've seen some that were actually done very well. Not over done! But I prefer older instruments anyway. Probably because that's what I own most.

I'd much rather put the "history" marks on them from years of use as opposed to something I'd have to make up "war stories" about!
