What kind of music do you like... - Page 2

I clicked everything but "Pop." I am primarily a jazz guy nowadays, with healthy portions of metal, alternative, and indie thrown in for good measure. I like stuff from every genre, though, except pop, which I took to be the manufactured pop they turn out nowadays. My favorite guitarist at the moment is Pat Metheny. Everyone on this site needs to listen to him. He has awesome chops, absolutely killer improvisational skills, and an ear for melody. Even if you don't like jazz or fusion, just check him out.

I like how Rap wasn't listed and it's one of the biggest genres today.

I listen to literally every type of music though, so I decided not to vote. Listening to merely one type of music is like eating only Ramen noodles everyday.

Well I listed "other", although I personally don't think bad rhythmic poetry constitutes music. Even Longfellow or Poe over a drumbeat with a 4 note loop isn't music to me.

I relally love melodic metal. The vocals don't have to be melodic just the sound over all. I also love guitar rock. Of course I love instrumental rock. Actually I think that is the highest form of art. I mean instrumental music as a whole.

Kiko Loureiro said it this way, "If you think about it, it's only sonic vibrations that are causing all these images and feelings. That is very abstract and very artistic." I paraphrased due to lack of memory but he's right you know. There is no one telling you "this is a song about a girl with balck hair and an amazing body..." or "this is about this and that political idea..." it lets your brain feed on the notes and create images. My favortie guitarist, Joe Satriani, talks about is too. Writing is difficult becuase he has to use the notes to tell a story without words.

This is also why I love classical music and film scores as well.

Music rules no matter what, even country songs hit me some times. Punk too although I don't have much to do with either. I just want to hear music at it's highest level regaurdless of genre. I like some more than others but it all deserves at least one listen.

"other" for me is Prog rock/ metal, I also will occasionally listen to the Streets or Oakenfold, but there wasn't a category for that stuff.
You can't get enough variety, IMO, I also love guys like Tom Waits, Peter White, Stanley Jordan, Buckethead, etc... the list goes on.

Funk is-Earth, Wind and Fire, Parliament Funkadelics, Brothers Johnson, Graham Central Station, Sly and the Family Stone, WAR, Ohio Players, Commodores, Gap band...to me this is FUNK

Good grief! Sorry 'man',didnt want to make anyone angry but I'm pretty sure he had something to do with an album called Centrifugal Funk and some other stuff Ive seen on youtube.
What I was getting at was I don't like the funk fusion stuff that these over intellectualized guitar players come out with and class as funk because to my mind it's not.

Shawn Lane was not a funk player, end of story. He appeared on Centrifugal Funk (a Mark Varney project album) as a guest to do two solo's, one of them was put on there without his permission (Lane's Blitz). Shawn wasn't happy about that album. Lane's Blitz was a warm up only.
