Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

Even though Paul Gilbert is my favorite shredder, EJ's tone pretty much rules all on this particular poll. He has tone for freakin' days.

Those not on the list:
David Gilmour's Space Age Blues sound
Clapton's (and Slash's) Woman tone
Santana's Thick and Creamy
I'd I always thought Kirk Hammet managed to pull some amazingly nice tone out of active pups.

Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

Based on what's on the list, I going for PG (unusual!!!).... I love his "cello" picking style, PG gets a lot more dynamics in his playing by the variances in the way he angles his pick.... It's a real skill to be able to control your picking that much - PG is the pick master!

A lot of people here are saying EJ and don't get me wrong, the man is technically perfect. But for me, it's too perfect. I like some edge, something that has harsh and soft patches, if you know what I mean.

Two others that come to mind that aren't on there are:
(what I would haven chosen out of anyone) - Van Halen - hands down the best tone for rock guitar ever. Period. He might not be the most technical guitarist anymore, but that "brown sound" is AWESOME....

For the newer breed of guitarists, I have to say Alexi of COB when he is not drunk off his face is phenomenal - his setup is remarkably simple, but he gets an awesome sound out of his axe!

Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

My favorite tone has to be Either SRV /Clapton for blues ..and Dimebag for metal/rock. He could squeeze such an awesome shred AND chugging riff tone out of that bill lawrence 500XL and a solid state amp.

I love EJ's tone, but I'm also a fan of Petrucci's Images tone, Loved Nuno's tone back in the day. I also have to agree with the Gilmore tone as well. Hard to pick just one.

There are so many guitarplayers out there with great tone. My favorites are Steve Vai and Mattias "IA" Eklundh.

Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

From that list it's gotta be petrucci, Glasgow Kiss is one of my al time favourites (but pretty damned tough to play!)

I know that there's a lot of shred interest on this forum, obviously, but no Gilmour?
