Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

I didn't vote but I'd choose Paul as far as the tone of his playing. For amp tone.. Andy Timmons. Mmmesa.

Umm...

Not bashing him, but he's known for a unique tone, not a good tone

Each man to his own. Just saying I wouldn't want a Krank solely because of him

Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

1- mesa boogie

2- rocktron

I don't like any guitarist's tone cause tone changes through all their albums. If you have Vai cds as an example, you know each cd has a different tone and feel.
As a mesa boogie lover I should pick Petrucci's tone BUT it's different in all albums and even different in songs of the same album.
So I'd prefer having my own boogies and carving my own tones.

If you don't like any guitarist's tone how do you manage to get your tone with similar gear to them? As you said each CD has a different tone and feel, so if you don't like ANY of them, you've got your work cut out to avoid them all?!??!

Come on, you've got to think, yeah, "that tone" on "that album" sounds good? Which one?

When I said I don't like any guitarist's I meant all of them have so many different tones and sometimes different in the same album so I can't pick only one.
I don't know Jono, like I said I like so many different tones from different albums and different players.Mesa boogie and rocktron delievers tones I like.Guitarists who use mesas have tones I like such as Petrucci,Timmons,Derek Friggo etc.
I never tried to get this or that guitarist's tone,I just plug my guitar ,listen than record it.If it sounds good with the whole mix, that's it.
If I had to pick 1 guitarist....hmm Petrucci.
Awesome cleans in all albums, powerful heavy rhythm guitars and beautiful lead tones but like I said, they're all different in his albuns so I can't pick only 1 tone.
That's why I prefer picking mesa and not only 1 guitarist.

Gotcha, I see what you mean.

I agree though, I'm a big boogie fan too.

In the words of Hans Gruber.

Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

Joe Satriani is my favorite tone...but I also put a vote up for Petrucci, Vai and Eric Johnson. There are particular things that I like in their tones depending on the music.

That said, my favorite Satriani tone is at Live at San Francisco. I still think that was his best performance on a live DVD to date, though his tone on Satch Boogie on the Rocking in a Free World DVD is also excellent.

Re: Who's Tone do you prefer ?

How about some Billy Gibbons? That man has got some THICK tone. My list looks something like:
EJ, EVH, Rev. Willie G., and maybe some classic Chuck Berry.
