Exactly.
Here's an example from Herman Li, on the last date of the Japan show threw his guitar case into the crowd. Then rather than smash his guitar up, he just threw it into the crowd, someone's life must've gotten much happier that day.

I'd never smash a guitar, for all of the reasons previously stated. I suppose the most important would be that I'd rather give it to someone who would be very inspired to have an instrument to play. I'd rather encourage a new musician, than perform some flashy destructive stage act that is way, way out of fashion anyway these days!

Herman doesn't count because he's a member on Jemsite as well

Personally, I cringe whenever I see someone remotely abuse a guitar (Ack! take that jacket with zippers off!). The exception to this is strats (except YJM's, because they are cool), as I have a very strange hatred for them for no reason in particular. I'd never harm one myself, though.

And if I was going to give my guitar out to the audience I'd carefully hand it out to the front row so it wouldn't be damaged, LOL.

yep guitars are just pieces of wood,there's nothing special about them.
So if I had the money to buy another one = smashed.
But for real I don't see how smashing a guitar could be funny.
I'd prefer donating it for people who can't afford one.
