Re: Yngwie Or Vai

ummm with out a question of doubt VAI... Malmsteen is sterile to me same old stuff just over and over and over.. And then the blatent ripping of classical phrases in his solos is just well wrong.

Plus you can only see about 9000 kicks and guitar swing-around-the-necks in 3 mins before its just stupid..

My 2 cents..

Vai has versatility, from shred to jazzy to bluesy to all out rhythms..

Playing with speed and fire is ok, I take other fast players like gilbert, impelliteri over yngwie, he just doesn';t do it for me. Yngwie is good and his technique is perfect but he just ..hmmm ... not my cup of tea

Re: Yngwie Or Vai

I find both guitarists interesting in their own ways but I don't like either of their music. I love Vai's playing and his style and you have to respect Yngwie for putting it down his way regardless of what other people think but music-wise neither of their music is really all that interesting to me. So I would have to go with a write in vote of Paul Gilbert.

Re: Yngwie Or Vai

Dude, you of course know who most of us on JEMsite will pick. Yngwie of course! So there's not much point in asking, really. Though I would want to be one of the few non-Jemmers and would pick Vai.

Re: Yngwie Or Vai

It's just plain wrong to compare such impeccable talents, there both so unique and incomparable. There's no definitive answer but ... Yngwie

Re: Yngwie Or Vai

I'd love to see yngwie play For The Love Of God.
Gotta say Vai, then Gilbert and i'd take Satriani over Malmsteen any day.

Re: Yngwie Or Vai

Technically, Vai is superior, he may not be as fast (which I'm sure he is actually, he just doesn't really show it) but he's definitely cleaner.

Well "Technically" I think you underestimate Vai, if he wasn't as fast he could've never pulled off the Alcattazz gig when Yngwie left; As far as Vai being
cleaner than Yngwie I think you are mistaken both of them possess great technical prowess but Yngwie's right hand is one of the fatest, strongest and cleanest out there so make no mistake.

Re: Yngwie Or Vai

I read somewhere from an interview with Steve saying that he had to leave some parts out what Yngwie originally played in Alcatrazz because they were as he said 'impossible' ..

You may find that Yngwie is repetative and boring, that's just personal opinion but make no mistake he is one of the most technically accomplished players out there .. I personally prefer listening to Yngwie's music to Vai's, technique isn't the be all and end all when it comes to me as a 'listener', what counts is how strong their music connects with the listener.
