AANJ vs Old School Joints - UV advice

I have always played an AANJ Ibanez RG7, K7 or whatever. However I feel my next guitar might be an old school UV.

How does the old neck joint compare to the aanj? I dont play that high that often but would like to when I can.

Just gimme comparisons I guess for the joints? Does it hinder your playing? Is it hard to get used to? etc... Is the 7th B harder to reach? Your preferences and which UVs you own.

I was looking o getting a green dot UV7bk or a UV7PWH, but then saw that the joint might not be as comfy as the aanj and am considering the uv777bk (with lopro - but chrome is so cheap looking)

Thanks

AANJ gives a much easier reach to higher fret IMO. The Old style heel gives sexy curves to the body though !

I never had a problem with either. Actually, it took me a while to get used to the AANJ

Yep! The old joint looks better from the front of the guitar IMO, but it is a little restricting if your hands are small. For best feel though AANJ is next to a neck-through guitar which feels nice if you play on the upper frets more.

I actually prefer the older neck joints over the AANJ myself. Reaching the upper frets is not really an issue with me, and I have smaller hands at 5'10"

I've got both, play all over the fretboard, and have never had a problem with either.

i got two s series 540. one 540s with the square heel and the other is a s540 with aanj. i dont have problem reaching the higher frets on the e b g or d strings but strecting for the a and e strings around the 20-22 frets is abit hard.

Typical "old school" guy

For me (just IMHO) the AANJ gives much easier access to the upper registers. If you play one for a while and then go back, you'll see what I'm saying I still love the "old school" joints as well (and always will) but with the AANJ, less effort is involved, plain and simple!

Old UV's with square joints for me. The neck profile is to die for.

I have average-sized hands and well, it somewhat hinders playing at the higher frets but it changed my playing technique. When I first got my UV777GR, I was perplexed by the flatter old style heel [not joint ] and this was my first 7 string I was going to get used to. I got offered a UV777BK to trade a week after owning it... I thought really hard about it and walked to the nearest GC to try one. The heel on the BK was much more comfortable... but the neck thickness/profile bothered me and wasn't going to be easy on my hands. So the GR stayed One of my friends has a BK that i get to play every so often and each time I reach the higher frets, my thumb kinda "remembers" there's a square heel when it's not really there... if that makes sense.
Otherwise, in terms of old school heels, there's the angled ones found in RG's then the flat ones found on Jem's and UV's. I've always thought the angled-ones were "better" but it doesn't make a difference nowadays since I don't place my thumb on the metal plate every time.

Similarly, there are different types of "old-school" joints, too (and this follows on from what judasbane was saying). The Early Jem/UV joint, the plain, Fender-style block joint, plus the "Tilt" joint of the RG550, etc.

I'd say that the early JEM/UV joint isn't bad at all. The old UV's are awesome to play, but compared to the Tilt joint found on the RG550, there's a massive difference between it and ANY AANJ. In other words, I wouldn't let the neck joint on an old UV be a factor in the purchase.

I have both, and really I have no preference. I doubt you will notice much if any difference after a few minutes of playing.
