Behold the Jemulator

Oh yes!!!

I wanted to make one of these 'jemulators' before and started programming in flash and using photoshop but I got bogged down in sheer number of variables!

perhaps it should be a gradual thing where people could submit extra features/colours/parts/inlays to you, hence the database of options could grow from a simple two inlay three colour option list to one where you can choose the colours in your swirl.

the blueprint idea would be fantastic, I dont believe such a site/thought has existed before now.

It would be amazing!!!

That's an awesome idea! I'd still like to see a VSBL with mirror pickguard, blue pickups, and aluminum fretboard.. That would rock.

You're off to a very good start, but you *definetly have a rocky road ahead. I'm sure it will rule when you're done.

A few comments on the idea:

- The finished image should preferable be a bit bigger than the current size.

- It might be an idea to use some kinda colour picker instead of radio buttons. I have no idea how dark "pearl blue" is so it would be nice to pick the colour from a sample map.

- How do you plan to do the colouring? The photoshop JEMs have nice shading in the correct places. Will you be able to do that or will you do a normal fill where i.e. the whole body gets the same shade of colour?

- Colour choices for fretmarkers would be nice.

- Some radio buttons might benefit from being replaced with comboboxes instead. Radio buttons are ok as long as there are around 5 options, but if some options have loads of options, the UI gets messy.

Great work so far!

don't work for me either. only the first page works.
when i click on "jemulate it!" button, this message opens:

FrontPage Run-Time Component Page
You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page that requires a web server and the FrontPage Server Extensions to function properly.
This form or other FrontPage component will work correctly if you publish this web to a web server that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

is it just me (and anuj) or is it some problem with your server?
in general, i like the idea. can't wait for more options.
if it doesn't take you much time, could you add some natural-wood-body options and 2 hums config? pretty please

Here's an idea... instead of doing all the image assembly on the back end with Java, why not just put all the different elements in their own DHTML layers as transparent GIFs (or PNGs) and then turn features on and off dynamically? Might be a little more straightforward than having to write a Java app to assemble and output a custom JPEG.

this is actually an idea I had a long time ago. *When I first came to the forum, I thought about coding an app in Visual Basic that would let you design the JEM you wanted, and based on a part list from Rich Harris, ATD and others, it would give you a price estimate. *Unfortunately, my lofty goals were met with less than competent coding abilities. *Since then I've spent 3 years in Computer Science classes in college and I hope to do that program this year.

Jay is right: give us the option Monkey Grip/Old Monkey Grip (I prefer the Old one).
Also: put the 'None' option on the inlays section. Yeah, I know that a Jem MUST have something on the board, but I prefer it blank.

WOW!

What else can I say - I certainly wasn't expecting the kind of response that I've had here to this simple idea.

Whilst I have on occaision had a few expletives hurled at me, I doubt if they've ever been all been *quite* so positive. (The single exception being my, ahem, performance during the Jemfest Jam - ha ha!)

So, I've certainly been given some food for thought on this and I'm determined to explore the possibilities a little further.

To everyone who's expressed their support - thanks. I do take encouragement from this and clearly, it seems that a Jemulator might be a 'nice-to-have'.

I only hope I can do the concept justice and that you're all tolerant of my efforts!

Now, before I start this I'll put up a few design aims, development goals etc. on the website - in the first instance putting some meat on the bones of this bare idea.

I'll do this to fill-out the concept a little and try to explain the way I see it working. I would certainly welcome further feedback in this forum - I know you'll keep a watching brief.

So within a few days I'll post again and let you know when I've updated the 'Jemulator' web page with the above and after that, please post back into the forum with comments.
