Can't get good mixed pickup sounds from 7VWH

I just don't get it. My Jem 10th can do all the Vai clean stuff - start of Tender Surrender etc but no matter what I do I can't get the 7VWH to pull it off. I have tried all pickup height combinations different strings etc but the high strings just sound ordinary (almost still humbucker like) and definitely un-Strat like. The switch is working fine and does cut off and switch in the appropriate coils.

Any ideas? Did they change something between 1995 and 2005? The woods alone aren't enough to make a big difference and in any case isn't Alder and Rosewood a typical Strat combination.

I wondered if the single coil pickup was wired the wrong way?

Did you buy the 7VWH used? If not, have it checked by a tech and see what the deal is. That would be my advice.

Interesting question. I did buy it used but first thing I always do is a partial disassembly and it all checks out, pickups solder joints etc. I can tell its had hardly any use.

perhaps next time I do a string change I shoulf compare the wiring to the wiring diagram on this site.
