Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

I have to admit, that guitar really isn't my style, but I'm still very excited for this build thread because a) this is the most custom project I've ever seen, and b) you have me super curious about those Sublime pickups. This thread was the first time I had ever heard of them, and I checked out their website after you mentioned them.

I'm looking forward to hearing how it sounds.

If photos can't capture it well enough you could always make a video and post it on YouTube.

Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

I plan on recording pieces that will be through a clean amp with and without effects, so that the overall tone can be heard. I am VERY impressed with the pickups... lots of balls, but with lots of character and very clear low ends. As you roll off the volume different nuances come through and without too much dropping of volume. What impressed me more is how the neck blends into the middle and then middle blends into the bridge pickups... you can tell that Andras from Sublime knows his stuff... and how one pickup compliments the other.

Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

Which pickup models did you choose? Sorry if this was mentioned already and I missed it.

Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

Yes, Sublime Pickups... I never heard of them either 3-4 months back, until someone mentioned them on another site. Hand wound and crafted in Hungary. The guy who makes them does a lot of specialty work for prog metal groups. He's pretty diverse in his applications, however. My luthier never heard of him before, and now he's getting Sublime to do a custom set for a Jazz Master that he's working on. You have to have lots of trust and be impressed to have someone over in europe do specialty pickups for a Jazz Master, when you can get all kinds of pickups in North America.

Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

Minus the silver hardware (since that's a separate issue, and regular chrome would be fine), the total cost was about $2750. It would have cost more, but I know various people in the industry who wanted to be part of the project. For example, the two hand-engraved plates (truss rod and trem) would cost anyone else $400, whereas I got it for less than half that (the engraver is a friend of the luthier). When I take pictures I'm going to try to capture the paint job, but it will be difficult... it's a metal flake paint that has some great depth to it... done by an autobody place that has won awards. Imagine a metallic paint on a car and you get the idea... very different in person than in photos.

Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

I'll tell you what's interesting about this guy... although he has 'stock' pickups (e.g., Deep Blue Ocean), he will alter its construction to give you something extra. I wanted more treble bit in my guitar (because it is of mahogany)... more bite, and particularly when it comes to the neck pickup (most of which are deep, dark and a hint of mud). Sublime delivered very well... he even scrapped pickup construction a few times and started over because he wasn't happy. These truly are customized pickups, and I couldn't be happier.

Re: Custom Jem Blitz!

Man, I have to say it... I think this is a bit over the top... I like the knobs and some of the details, but I find it quite flamboyant and ugly (in the way that a chromed hummer h2 would be)... but hey, whatever floats your boat, and if you're happy with it, then good for you, no offense meant.

It's supposed to be over the top, lol. Nonetheless, I find the swirl stuff ugly, and I wouldn't pay 5k for a dinged up relic.
