Custom jem owners or modified jem's

What pickups did you put into your custom built jems, or did you just go with evo's or breed's? H-S-H configuration

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

Well, Im currently getting my second custom guitar built with that neck I bought, adding a korina body, HSH. I'm going with an Evo in the neck, a Cruiser in the middle, and a D Activator in the bridge.

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

I went with "old looks, newer sound" approach and made a Rootbeer Jem but with an alder body end evo set.

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

My other custom body is being routed with the old RB jem straight handle and
should be finished within the next two weeks. The body is basswood though,
but has evo's and an HS3 for the single coil. How does that combo sound IYO,
alder and evo's on a custom body? I'll post up pics when it arrives! I'm just looking for something
different than evo's and I read some reviews on breeds and how they sounded
muddy to quite a few people/owners. What setup does/did petrucci have in
his current MM or his past Ibanez guitars? I really like his tone on his solo album.
Thanks for responding!

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

i'm trying to make my dbk a little more interesting, so i put in some cream/ black humbuckers to make a sidewalk pattern with the black single in the middle (neck- PAF Pro, Bridge- Norton). sure hope it turns out good sound wise!

i'm also trying toget a neon green pickguard made for me, but i haven't exactly put effort into finding someone who can do it for me.

anyway, that was a little off topic but i thought i'd say it anyway.

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

Mine is a basswood body with all dimarzio pickups. Its got an EVO 2 in the bridge, HS - 3 in the middle and a PAF Pro in the neck. I had the pickups directly mounted to the body. =)

I'm very very very happy. I get tones of different tones.

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

Mahogany body, ebony fretboard.

Dimarzio Double Whammy - bridge

PAF Pro - neck

I want to add that I just installed an Evo II in the bridge of my RG20th (basswood) and it sounds tight and full. I'm very pleased and plan to drop a PAF Pro in the neck soon.

OH MY. That mahogany body jem is out of control. I want to hear it.

You should be the person to ask about pickups. You recommended me exactly what I wanted with the EVO 2 and PAF pro though the middle pickup was my idea. I swear by the HS - 3

I like a more mid range tone think of that AC/DC tone with more edge or that Fair warning tone. When I go clean I can get those Andy Summers type tones.

You should be a pickup consultant.

John Petrucci, at least when he still had (to me) REALLY good tone, aka Scenes From A Memory era, used an air norton in the neck and a steve special in the bridge. The Dimarzio Steve Special is by FAR my favorite bridge pickup - its powerful but extremely clear, and extremely versatile. Any style works amazingly well on it.

But, for my second custom guitar, I figured since i already had a steve special in the bridge of my first custom I'd go for the new D Activator pickup, i tried it in a Xiphos and really liked the tone.

Re: Custom jem owners or modified jem's

Is that setup from Petrucci from when he still used Ibanez? IMO, his tone was a lot better with those Ibanez guitars than now with the musicman. Liquid Tension FTW!

I'm listening to Paradigm Shift right now

Three months until my new neck gets here. I'll post pics of my (vastly superior) guitar once it's finished.

I've got Biaxident down almost perfectly. I just need to find a backing track for it. I've been working on Paradigm Shift, but those solos are killing me.
