Don't worry, you will hear from him. He's swamped with orders, and he's only one man. It took me forever to get a response, too. (Which reminds me, how 'bout those pics, Jer? )

I don't get it either... how does Charvel get away with using a Fender style headstock?

I'm sure the Fender strat headstock is just as patented as the Ibanez headstock... and I see a helluva lot of Fender strat headstock knockoffs... Charvel being a high profile company that copped it, among many other smaller outfits.

Because Fender Musical Instrument Corps own Charvel.

Re: Custom JEM vs Production JEM

Well the website (www.charvel.com) does say:

"The headstock and body designs of the EVH Art Series guitars are the trademarks of FMIC."

Never checked out their website... they're a subsidiary of Fender, eh?!

Well... I guess either that or a licensing fee would explain it. yah.

Fender owns Charvel and Jackson.

Re: Custom JEM vs Production JEM

Hey Jermey,

I have 2 of the orginal Jem guitars before Ibanez started making them I had them built by Joe Dispangie the orginal builder of the jem guitar and he called his company Jem guitars. I wanted to find him so he can build me another custom guitar but he is nowhere to be found I don't know what happened to him I also spoke to some of the people who own some of his jem guitars and they told me they had no luck finding him either. Can you build me a simillar guitar to the orginal strat style Jem with an orginal floyd rose tremolo 2 humbuckers and a single coil no pick guard and what price would you charge me to build this guitar. One of my orginal jems was in an accident and the body has a crack in the wood on the inside of the guitar there is no visibly cracks showing. You can actually hear the crack in the body when I plug in the guitar through my amp. Is there anything I can do to fix this guitar. Thanks for all your time.

Sincerely
mitch319

To build a JEM is more expensive than to just buy a production guitar. I can't build a guitar and sell it for what Ibanez can, it's just not possible, not if I ever expect to pay any bills.

When considering a custom JEM vs a production, the benefits are:

1. You get a one off JEM to YOUR specs, something that's never been done before

2. You can choose your hardware and pickups, maybe a fixed bridge instead?

3. You get whatever color you want, inlay, woods etc.

4. Fit and finish is better than a production guitar

HOWEVER, if you are emailing in hopes of getting a JEM7VWH for less than you can find one on **** it's not going to happen. Also, I can't legally cut the Ibanez headstock shape, some people get annoyed when I tell them that. Well, I'd rather lose a sale to that than have Ibanez nail me for copying their headstock.

Anyway, I wanted to post here so the info was out there. Buying a custom guitar is more money, the end results are more than worth it IMO, but please don't expect ANY small custom shop to be able to compete with the prices of a mass produced guitar.

Thanks
Jeremy

Ed Roman has built some fine replicas of many popular Ibanez superstrats, better known as Scorpions. Models include the Picasso, Alien, Yankee Rose and Rebel guitars. The Yankee Rose, for example, is modeled after an early Evolution JEM: the only difference between the original EVO and the Yankee Rose is a maple fingerboard replaces the original ebony one with the tree-of-life inlays. The Picasso blends a RG with a Saber. The Alien is based on a JS100 Joey Satriani signature and the Rebel is an exquisite replica of Reb Beech's famous sliced-up guitar.

Re: Custom JEM vs Production JEM

I have been building my own custom jem for a while now, and I have to say that even just building one form bits is way more time effort and expense than buying a proper Ibanez product. Of course having a guitar custom made by a pro-luthier is a different case of eggs entirely.
