Does your Jem neck Shift? (777 content)

Hi Guys,
I just got a 777DY and love it. It seems to be in really great shape, very clean.
I noticed that when I first pushed the neck down, it creaked. I can make the neck do this as will by pushing or pulling the neck up or down. It does not do it side to side.

There is the typical 1" crack in the neck pocket but it only looks like it's in the finish.

Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

Thanks,
Paul

Well first of all don't push or pull it!!! Just play it.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Tighten the neck screws. Chances are the wood is probably reacting to temperature changes.

I checked them and they seem tight. I didn't want to really bear down on them. I've seen guys do that and crack the paint under the neck plate.

Are you sure it's the neck? Not the trem itself or the strings going through the locking nut?

tighten the neck screws and the locking nut ones (the ones that hold the nut to the neck)

I tightened both. I can still make it shift.
I guess it may be tiome to take it apart and see if the hairline crack in the neck pocket is deeper than I thought.
Or if the neck will need to be doweled and redrilled.

I'm pretty sure it's not the tremolo as I can make the neck do the same thing if I put my forearm on the body and push or pull the neck towards and away from me.
click...click...

It's actually not that big of a deal but since the guitar is new to me, I want to make sure.
I would think this sort of shift would affect tuning stability as well.

It sounds great, nice a meaty with just enough edge....

Check your Truss Rod. If its too loose and you fiddle with the trem sometimes the nut at the end will hit the wood and make it sound like something is loose/or moving. I had this problem and just tightened it up a bit.

I took it apart and found the bass side was rubbing on the pickguard.
A few minutes with a file and all is very good...
