fabric top rg almost done

well, the project is well underway. i am all set to begin the clearcoat process. i wish i had a digital cam so i could have taken pics along the way. once the body is done and i have reassembled the guitar i will try to find someone with a cam to take a few pics for me to post here. the guitar is an rg321 and the fabric i chose had 4" tropical leaves on a black background. i only did the fabric finish on the top, painted the sides and back black, and will follow that with several coats of clear. i used the tutorial from projectguitar.com and it has gone quite well. i also used the tutorial for how to do a poor mans burst on the top. it looks pretty good but i think i would have better with more practice. once this is done i am gonna buy another rg321 body and attempt another fabric finish. stay tuned for pics in a couple weeks!!

Cool! I can't wait to see how it turned out. I've been thinking about doing that to one of my guitars, but am too chicken!

There seems to be a disturbing trend on Jemsite recently of people making posts about things and then not providing pics. Why do they torment me so?

cmd130, you are a tease! I can't wait to see this project of yours.

i got the fabric from virginiaquilter.com and it's a cotton fiber material. i got my sanding sealer and clear lacquer from stewartmacdonald.com. i just bought the lacquer in spray cans cuz i don't have pro equiptment. i read somewhere that u can't get a decent finish with spray cans but i dis agree. u just need to have patience and remember not to rush it. i used the tutorial from projectguitar.com as my instructions. the tutorial was pretty spot on as to how to do it but there are a few things they don't tell u, like that once uspray ur clear lacquer any sanding u do must be wet-sanding in order to get a truly smooth, level surface. all in all, it has been pretty cool but has taken such a long time. i loaned my other guitar to a friend cuz he is recording with it and i have been left w/o something to play. i am definetly having a major case of playing withdrawl. all i have left to do is apply 3 more coats of lacquer, sanding between coats with succesively finer sandpaper, 600 grit, then 800 grit, and ending with 1200 grit. then i have to let the lacquer cure for 10-14 days and do a final sanding with 1500 grit paper for a mirror finish followed by hand polishing with a fine grit polishing compound (also from stewartmacdonald).
