Didn't Steve Vai say something similar?

Like when he gets a new guitar or car he scratches it right away, just to get it over with? :-)

Thanks Everyone,

Yeah I actually was pretty calm on this ding (this is my second VWH)
The first VWH I had I tweaked when I got my first ding (Maybe it was cause it happened less then a week after I got it)

I am just looking at it as "Character" It helps of course seeing the history of EVO.

Peace to all
TIM

Beat piece of crap

Distantshore,

I think now that you've destroyed that beautiful piece of art...the only humane thing to do is render it to a person who would take better care of it. So...HAND IT OVER!

NOW!

YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY 'NOT WORTHY'!

I dropped my Jem 10 on the sidewalk recently. Picked it up, big ding, smile, move on.

Maybe I won't be saying that when I drop it and the neck splits into a million tiny shards! There was a great Simpsons scene where we see a young Homer brushing his hair and it's starting to fall out onto his comb. He laughs and says "Heh heh, plenty more where that came from."

Well you're part of the ding community now, welcome. Just remember that when you sell the axe a phrase that I've used with women works very well: "If you squint really hard, you might be able to see it."

Guitars are for playing, not looking at Any dings add character, as long as it doesn't effect the joy you get from playing it, it's no big deal. Hell, I remember kicking a guitar across stage due to it not cooperating with staying on my shoulder, now the scratches on the back tell a story (although i did worry about it after I'd done it, but that was wether it'd still be in one piece, don't worry, it wasn't an ibanez )

i cant stand scratching or dinging my guitars, i feel so depressed and bad after i do, one time i had my strap slung across my back and should, putting my 7620 away, and sure enough, teh strap fell down with the straplok, and chipped a piece right off near my volume knob, i almost cried and i was really sad that day....

The first time I dinged my 7VWH, I was horrified, it had cost me so much, and I was always so careful...but, I got over it, I was never going to sell it, anyways, and dings are pretty much inevitable, in my experience, anyways.

I gigged with it as my main guitar for several years, and it's got so many chips and dings on the back/edges, it's very close to looking like Evo at this point, and it still pales in comparison to my EP Les Paul Classic, which is beat absolutely to hell.

But yes, the first dings are the most painful. Every new guitar I get, the first time I ding it is rough, but in a way, it's almost a relief, because it's done, you no longer have to worry about it happening, and the tedium of handling it like it's made of crystal is no longer necessary.

Baby gets its first bit of personality!

But it's true, the first one is usually the hardest...

Well... I guess I have to disagree with you guys.

To me, a ding just looks bad. A heavyly used neck, or slightly worn out harware might add that touch of personality. You can customize the hell out of a guitar to make it more personal, but dings dont look good to me.

It s not that I would commit suicide after a ding, but I will probably try to fix it.

I remember that, after having my 92 RBM1 for more than 9 years (without a ding) one day a huge hotweels fell over it a literally rip a piece of wood out of the top horn. The piece of wood was intact, an so was the paint on it so I glued it with a lot of care and now its hard to notice.

Besides, the idea that dings makes a guitar "with story or personality" asumes that the ding was made in a gig, or in some interesting situation. The truth is that most of the dings happen while you atempt to reach the pizza without putting the guitar in the stand, or similar situations in wich you smash you guitar against a wall or a coffee table.

I think there are exceptions...... like the 7BSB, wich is a guitar that was ment to worn off. However, I recently bought one that was in very good condition but with the stain totally worn of in the neck and heavily worn off in the back..... I re stained the whole guitar and now it looks like new!

I hear that. I've got a 7BSB which dings so easily because of the lack of finish - but when you knock it, it dents rather than dings/chips or scuffs on hard edges to show the natural/burnt wood . The wood is so soft. Mix that with sweaty smurf hands and the guitar just keeps changing......but not in a painful way.

Now if I put a ding in my UV77mc, then I would cry!
