fp neck is thicker. After playing an rg, then trading up to a jem, I can say that I have never looked back. I originally wanted a 777sk, and got the fp (an'8

because it was there and I had the funds if I traded a couple of others in.
I tried a "new" fp a few months before buying mine. There is no comparison IMHO. THe older Jem won hands down. I don't think that the neck was dimensionally very different, but the guitar felt and played better. I don't know if the
fret wire spec, and neck finishing has been over the years, but I definately preferred it old style. The only thing I don't like is the
neck joint, but overall I am happy.
I tried out a 2000 vwh and felt pretty much the same about that. The modern Jems I have bought feel more like the modern RGs. If you like those alot, then maybe they are the axes for you. Obviously if you get the chance try out an older model.
