Re: fret scalloping

in the old days of non-aanj, it made it easier to fret those notes. it's somewhat redundant now.

Re: fret scalloping

The scalloping makes the higher notes (e.g. 21-24) easier to play. I've heard that if the scalloped frets are pressed on too hard it will not make any sound. I have also heard that scalloped necks are much harder to play than regular, non-scalloped necks. If the scalloping is only on the 21-24 frets, then the scalloping is more economical, but I may be wrong. To tell you the truth, I haven't played any guitars with scalloped frets or necks, so I may be wrong about this information. I hope this answered some of your questions, though.

Re: fret scalloping

easier to bend too, and to an extent lets the note ring clearer.

Re: fret scalloping

well, most people scallop frets for the feel. I wouldn't do it unless I'm sure I'd like it. Try it out first if you can.

Re: fret scalloping

scalloping,... quite a thing...

Personally, I don't think it's really necessary on the whole neck for ibanez guitars, since they are already equipped with pretty big frets.

With a scalloped neck your fingers will never touch the fretboard
+ more grip on the strings for easier, more extreme bends/vibratos
+ might lighten your fingering touch. less tendonitis, more speed.
- if you don't have a light touch, you're going to be out of tune
- note to note slides are a bit harder

on top of that, especially when you're new to scallops, you have an experience of "floating" above the neck and strings. Really cool

So, it makes bends and vibratos more expressive, slides however will get a little harder. IF it lightens your touch ( due to not having to flatten your finger on the fretboard before the string frets nicely ) you might experience a sense of freedom in you fretting hand, mainly on sweep picking in my experience. And... it's nice to play something different.
scalloping is not for you if you like to really dig in with your fretting hand ( either on chords or melodic lines ), you willl sound way out of tune ( common problem with people new to scallops).

I would not suggest doing it if you have only one guitar. It's nice to have on an extra guitar.

Re: fret scalloping

On my Jem from 1988, the frets are still so tall that I never press the string down to the fretboard. And it feels great! Don't know how this exact guitar would sound with lower frets, and I'm not going to find out!

Re: fret scalloping

ive never had a guitar where the string itself touches the fretboard, so i am sceptical to the extent of the difference scalloping makes, especially with the not pushing down so hard thing.
