Is it just me or does any one else think that $1200 should buy you a guitar (especially a Jem) that already has a true professional setup
This is what Ibanez was founded on in the 70's, and a business practice that I emulate now.
When they were marketing the "lawsuit era" guitars, they had techs (from Japan) in the states setting up every guitar. When you went to a retailer and pulled stuff off the wall to demo, the Ibby guitar was set up and played great, while the old standby's were horrible in comparisoon. I don't know why this has stopped on the higher end models. I agree, if you're paying over a grand, it should be ready to play.
Our stuff starts a $749 street, and all have a pro setup. Of course, we're small, so it's easier to have a handle on.
Edit - FYI - I got a SFG from Rich in the raw, and had my tech set it up. It took a few hours, but it plays every bit as well as any of my other Jems.
