hum problem - w/ PAF pros

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice about these two problems with my '89 VBK. *

1. The neck humbucker hums a lot more than the other pups, even the single coil. *Positions 1 and 2 hum like crazy, while the others are fine. *I popped off the pickguard, and all of the connections were solid and correct according to the schematic. *What's the deal? *Bad pickup?

also,

2. *The tone knob affects the tone on the bridge and middle pups just as you'd expect; however, on the neck humbucker, it seems to be a sort of gain rolloff. *Could this be due to the humming problem or what?

any ideas are welcome.

Pickups do short out, although it's not really common. Considering that your guitar is almost 13 years old, it's not impossible that your pickup just ate it.

The PAF Pro has Alnico magnets & they hum more than ceramic magnets in high distortion circumstances, I've noticed. What's in the bridge position?

I've got the stock PAF pro in the bridge also. *I've been considering the DiMarzio Hum from Hell and the Tone Zone. *This may be a good time to consider a switch...
