Is the JEM body the same as the RG body?

Is the JEM body the same as the RG body?

Guy selling Luthier templates said the Jem and the RG have exactly the same body (exepct for the "monkey grip"and "lions claw"at the bridge cavity)

Thanks for your answers

the jack hole is also different (tilt jack on the JEM) and the cavity is 90 degrees rotated.

the 7vwh white Jem is Alder wood, RG's are basswood, however the Jem 7vbk is basswood.

Well... there are mahogany and maple RGs!
I suppose Aiki was refering to the body shape only.

Re: Is the JEM body the same as the RG body?

Early Jems (pre-AANJ) had the full-cut heel, while RGs had the tilt cut neck joint.
Not all AANJs are equal either, notably the J-Custom AANJ.

Re: Is the JEM body the same as the RG body?

There actually was an alder RG aswell, the RG570CT from around 1994/1995.

But yes, if you just want to saw out the rough body shape from a block of wood, the RG and Jem shapes are the same, and so you can use the same template. The basic pickup, electronics and hardware routings are also the same (assuming we're talking about a bolt-on neck H-S-H pickup RG with a scratchplate, as there are others).
It's mainly the details that are different (as mentioned, the lion's claw, the monkey grip, and the tilt jack on the JEM).

Re: Is the JEM body the same as the RG body?

well if you wanted it to be complete...

Jem:
  • Basswood (american),
    Alder (+basswood veneer)
    Acrylic
+ one offs in ash, mahog (/w maple) etc.

RG:
  • Basswood (asian)
    Alder
    Mahogany (RG2020x)
    Ash (RG547 AHNTM)
    fl./qlt./spalt. maple over mahog
    swamp ash over mahog (RG6CST)
    koa over mahog

AFAIK no full maple, no swamp ash, no poplar (to name a few popular choices)

There have certainly been full maple RGs and even "resoncast" ones, so not quie a complete list

there might be more still

Thanks. I have now clear that the body shate is the same.

1) In addition, I always thought that the Jem (and UVs) are thicker that RGs, is that true?

2) The H-S-H pickup routings are the same for a non-scratchplate and a scratchplate?

3) The RG and Prestige body shape (template) is the same too?

1) I think even the same models vary slightly in demensions (very slightly) especially if a human is involved in the construction process.

2) Pickguards offer front wire routing of the guitar as the pickups are mounted to the pickguard and drop in to the cavities but I believe pickup slots are bridged by a router to allow wiring to fall in so the pickguard sits flush.

3) Not all Prestige models are RG, but the ones that are are the same basic shape minus what was earlier stated about the AANJ.

1) No, all the same thickness.

2) No

3) Yes, all RG/Jem the same
