Question

Is this a real Jem77FP?

Hi all,

I have been visting here for a while now, and now that I am considering buying my first Jem, I thought it would be a good idea to register.

Like I said, I am seriously considering buying the Jem77FP in the pictures below:

Jem77FP, front whole
Jem77FP, front of body
Jem77FP, back of body

Everything (the print of the cloth, position of knobs & screws, trem, etc.) looks OK to me, except for one thing: in the first picture, the monkey grip seems larger than it should be. I have compared it to a number of other pictures I have found, and it just looks about 1 cm too wide. Also, in the last picture, a V-shaped ridge is visible on the neck, right next to where it is bolted to the body. I have not seen this on any other FP.

So the big question is: is this a real FP, and am I imagining things? Or is this a (really well-done) copy?

Many thanks in advance.

Yep. Looks real.

The monkey grip looks larger because of the black fade around the edges of the fabric.

I would think it's real. My FP has the V-shaped rib at the connection of the neck. I'm not sure if Ibanez put Lo-Pro Edges on any FP, but that's easily changed. It looks pretty good to me, but oddly enough, that monkey grip does look kind of big. Might just be lighting tricks though...???

Re: Is this a real Jem77FP?

That was quick, thanks.

Apparently FPs were fitted with Lo-Pros from something like '91-'92 onwards, so that should be OK.

I also did not know they were ever made with direct-mounted pickups, but it turns out they switched to direct-mount pickups around '94-'95.

Looks real to me too, but the monkey grip does look 'large' ... weird, maybe just an optical illusion ...

What you have there is..................... A REAL FP!!!

You can tell because the heel/neck plate is worn
If it were a Chibanez............ it would look brand new,
because as they play so bad - no one would have played it long enough to wear the finish LOL

Re: Is this a real Jem77FP?

The serial number is F98 35330, so that would make it a '98. He says he bought it in '98, so that should check out.

Funnily enough he claims the neck plate was worn like that when he bought it new, but I am thinking he is simply mistaken there.

Anyhow, I am almost convinced it is real, and I am going to have a look at it on Monday. Many thanks for your help so far, I will let you know how it turns out.

He's not mistaken! He's lying He didn't buy it new! If you are really thinking about purchasing this, PLEASE check it out in person before so. By stating he bought it NEW like that, the seller has already shown his true charactor! (or he got fooled into thinking it was new, in which case he's just a dumb arse )
