Question

Jem 7VWH colour variations

Hi,

I recently purchased a Jem second hand. I have noticed that the colour of the body appears to be more of an ivory cream colour and the headstock is more of a brilliant white.

I have checked all the bits and pieces and I am convinced the Jem is not a fake. It is a 01 model with an Ebony board.

I have checked the archives and some think that Ibanez may have slight variations in the paint used and the headstocks and bodies are not painted together so this may explain the differences.

I also vaguely recall something about Ibanez now placing a very small layer of basswood on the top because when they were painting straight on to Alder the tops on some VWH's were coming out cream coloured.

Are there any other known explanations?

Thanks,

Wolfram

White guitars can turn yellowish/cream if left in the sunlight over a period of time. The UV rays bleach the colour. I think that's what has happened to your guitar.

Re: Jem 7VWH colour variations

I thought that the 7VWH used paint specifically designed not to change colour?

well they did, and they all have the basswood veneer, not to keep them white, but to prohibit the paint from setting into the alder grains, which would show up as texture. Basswood is more evenly grained (less pronounced) than Alder.

Re: Jem 7VWH colour variations

I bought mine new and started a thread about the colour being more creamy then i thought it would be. the edge of the pickguard is definitely a more vibrant white.

But, Rich told me to forget about it!! So i did LOL. But...I still think my colour is slightly different from others.

How bout a pic or 2?

I think they look much better when the color is faded. Just look at Vai's EVO. Your never going to find a stock 7VHW more attractive than that, regardless of how beatup it is.

the paint is mixed with titanium dioxide so it won't yellow, so i guess either fake(which u sure it isnt) or really horrible uv exposure

Re: Jem 7VWH colour variations

If it's faded, remove the pickguard and you'll see.

Re: Jem 7VWH colour variations

I think they tend to age and become a little richer in color over time. I have an '03 VWH and a very nice '94 VWH body and pups from Rodney James. I put the '03 ebony neck on the '94 body and the headstock is now a little ligher than the body. The headstock matches the stock body fine, but it is a little lighter than the '94 body. The '94 isn't nearly as cream as EVO, but I really dig the way the aging paint looks. I can produce pics to a willing host if needed.

If that is true, then it makes no sense at all. How could adding a veneer be more cost effective than sealer? You would have to seal the basswood before paint anyway.
