JEM off of the shelf - Same as Vai's? *I think not!

* Didn't Steve Vai love the JEM becuase he wanted to go into a store, play one, and have it be the exact same as his? *But his EVO and others are drastically modified and it makes me a tad disheartened, making it seem like buying a VWH would get me nowhere near his sound anyway. *Anyone know all of the differences on Vai's own machines?

No. What he did say was "..I wanted the JEM designed so that I could go into any music store, pick one up, and it would play and sound like the ones I have...", or something like that.

Oh...and BTW....That was over 10 years ago. Tastes change in that amount of time. And apart from the neck (which is back to the VWH neck on Steve's guits, I think), the sustainer and tuners, it is the same guitar as you would pick up in any music store.

The reason you can't get Vai's sound is because (and I hate stating the obvious) you're not ummmmmm....Vai.

*heehee, well, it's hard to come to grips, but I guess I'm not Steve Vai * * I was only saying that the new JEMs should have some of those newer Vai'isms, like the sustainer and such. *I dunno, I'd like 'em.

The basics are still there, even though his main players are heavily modified. *Under the Sustainer, cotton, and touch-up paint, it's still a JEM body and a JEM neck.
You can do all those mods too. *:-)

Think of it this way...
The car that Jeff Gordon drives is not the same car you can go pick up at your local dealership. *It's been customized (just a little. LOL).

(oxymoron: stock car)

Also, keep in mind that amps, amp settings and other effects and soundgear make a huge difference on the guitar sound.

With the wrong settings you can make a VWH sound worse than the cheapest sammick available !

That is the most important aspect of of your sound. If you cant play, no gear in the world (not even a triaxis and a VWH) will save you from sounding like (a spoiled)sh*t... *hehhe... * Just gotta practice
