jem value question

Ive owned and played my Jem 777 vbk for yrs, bought it used in 93 I think for $600.00
couple of yrs back the neck cracked at the scarf joint.
I repaired it the way Rich shows on his website, not quite invisible but close.
plays the same if not better, no buzz, no action sacrifice just a small scar.
question...
how badly did this hurt the value of the guitar?
opinions anyone
including rich hopefully
thanks
cp

Re: jem value question

Welcome
We'd really need pics to see the condition. I'd say e bay would be the best way to determine the current market value... or even better Rich himself. From what I've seen vbk's usually list for about 800 or 900... I think. Whether they sell for that much I wouldn't have a clue. If you go to e bay go to completed listings and type vbk and you can see what actual sell has been. Then factor in the crack and repair.

Cheers
Themi

Patience is a virtue. Someone will perhaps have an opinion and comment if you give them enough time. Also, you will get more answers with a positive attitude then demanding them.

Welcome to the forum.

Re: jem value question

I wasn't really looking for a current market value for the guitar
I was just wondering what the forums opinion was of a repaired Jem
weather the aficionados considered the typical cracked neck problem made these total rejects (parts guitars)
I can post pics if you like but it didn't really seem relevant

Re: jem value question

I sent you a PM within 2 hours of your original post, that's not being ignored, that's speed... of course you'll have to remember that not everyone checks this forum everyday or is notified when you ask a question they could know the answer to... you gotta give it a few days to get some responses as said above: patience is a virtue...

Re: jem value question

what happened to the neck pickup, that is another thing you need to consider as a value factor unless you have the original and you are going to out it back.
Theres great section on rich website on how to clean a rosewood fretboard:
http://www.ibanezrules.com/tech/grunge/grunge_3.htm

EDIT:
Just noticed that all the pickups were replaced with EMG so I don't know.

Re: jem value question

hey manticore,

got the PM back, i'd say go for it with the restoring it, i personally love the 777VBK's and think you're looks great (except for those EMG's, haha), especially the neck repair, looks like you did a great job on that and i can only really tell anything was done because it looks lighter in color. so good work there, i'm sure if you decide to fix whatever else you want to then it will come out equally well.

as for 550, i'm guessing its a maple fretboard? there's a guy on here with forum name 'HDS', who seems to know a pretty good way to clean the maple fretboard up nicely. maybe you could ask him if he could tell you how to do it. i think he said simple green somewhere in the thread but i can't remember. http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f21/je...ht=maple+clean

best of luck with the 550 neck and the VBK restorations

Tim

Re: jem value question

thanks for the clean up links!
as far as the emg's go I have always been a die hard emg guy
but now that I do mostly studio stuff they are not as critical to performance
so I will be digging the old green dimarzio's out of the closet and reinstalling them.

Re: jem value question

Personally it would not put me off buying, but I wouldn't pay full market value for any guitar with a repaired neck. I have some, and they play fine, but I know that the market would view that as less attractive to buy than a non-broken neck, and therefore the market value must be less.

The repair looks solid though, well done. I have used the same tutorial!
