JEM10 refinish???

Well folks, my JEM10th has suffered a major problem. Some touchup work became a partial refin which went sour. Long story short-be forwarned. The abalone "binding" is actually a decal and cannot take ANY SANDING WHATSOEVER. Now I have a body that I wish to restore to original but am at a loss as to where to turn. If any of you have an idea where I can get my body restored(the guitar body that is-for those who know me...) please feel free to drop me an email at albee1952@bellsouth.net

Yikes!!!

Can you post some pics? I saw pics of some chipping in the abalone and always thought it was just a very thin strip but a decal???

Re: JEM10 refinish???

I also find it hard to believe its a decal..

Abalone is/can be cut extremely thin, and could have glue residue which would make one believe its a decal.

Put some pics up..

Re: JEM10 refinish???

The binding is abalam [if not real abolone], it's not paper thin. It's not thick, but it is thick enough to puncture the clearcoat when it contracts from freezing.

My JEM10th has a piece of missing in the abalone (from factory cause its under the clearcote).

Re: JEM10 refinish???

that is complete bull sh*t!!!! for what those things cost, i'd expect real abalone binding... not some cheap rip off!!! i say, if you can afford it, send it to a luthier and have some real inlay put down! make it look even better!!!

I cringed when I read this,. Kinda' reminded me of a bone poking through the skin. Best of luck in your restoration. Pics of before and after would be nice as this project unfolds!

How the hell did that get thru QC? I figured these uber jems would be gone over with a fine tooth comb and a magnifying glass.

Re: JEM10 refinish???

And what exactly makes you think it's plastic, especially since it's under the clear?

Abalam is real abolone, just laminated to make it easier to work with in manufacture. Abalam costs twice as much as straight abalone.

The binding is pearloid but I have seen that same color before. I am trading emails with someone that may restore it for me. I will keep you posted on that. Here is a link to a photo showing the damage.

I listed the neck and pickguard on *** with reserves. As of now, the bidding has stalled too low so I may keep everything and pray for a successful restoration.
