JEM7D

I tried the 7D at a music store & the pickups did not have the as good an output as a dean X-guitar. Does anybody know why?

they are different pickups? :P not all pickups are the same output, usually really cheap stuff has pickups so hot that all others sound quiet, but they also suck. The 7D had the Breed pickups, they aren't as hot as an evolution, but they are good pickups

I didn't like the Breed in my 7D either so dumped a Dimarzio "Steve's Special" in the bridge position. Three words:

RESPEC' DA CHUNK!

She screams, moans and chunks with the best of 'em now (IMHO).

Obviously, the bottom line is personal preference. IMHO the Breed's are the best pickups I've ever heard in a Jem.
It all really depends on the tone and sound you're looking for.

I loved the sound of the Breed's when I played a 7D. They seemed a little warmer and had more crunch to them in comparison to a guitar with Evo's.

the breeds are insane for metal. evo's are great...a little warmer and rounded-sounding. breeds are tight with a little more mids.

Is that insane as in 'You can't use them for metal!' or insane as in 'Whoa! I feel a tattoo growing up my leg, and i've dyed my two pronged beard purple through a solid-state randall' ?

Kinda funny really, for me the Breed just didn't have enough b@lls - too smooth and middle-bottom heavy for me. I needed something that would be rough in upper registers but with good bottom end and cut-back mids.

It just comes down to a matter of taste really.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but arent all jems wired so that the humbuckers are in parallel? All of my jems Were, so I rewired them so the humbuckers were in series, which increased the output and tone tremendously.

the vai special does seem to be a very good choice for the 7DBK

just the bridge should be replaced though, the rest is great.

The Steve's Special? I don't think there's any relationship with Vai...I believe that "Steve" is Steve Blucher, pickup designer extraordinaire from DiMarzio.
