Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

VWH is just too much trailer park chique, so DBK for me, but if the choice was between a used DBK and a new VBSL I would go for the VBSL. It's true that the DBK is priced a lot lower than the 7VWH due to the difference in features and add-ons, but those (vine vs phillips, gold vs chrome, evo vs breed, alder vs basswood) don't necessarily mean the VWH is a better playing/sounding Jem. Some of those I wouldn't actually call upgrades (like alder, gold and evo) just apples and oranges...

BTW A new 7VWH has a rosewood fretboard, an older VWH (pre 2003 ?) should come with an ebony board. That I would consider a true plus over the DBK.

...which is why a have a 777DSY not a GMC and a Jem90HAM not a BSB...

evo, ebony, basswood, metal pickguard:

Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

I've owned both, and now I just have the VWH... the weight of the body never mattered to me... although the DBK was light as a feather, I still prefer the VWH. All around in my opinion, it's a better guitar. It felt more solid, and I love evos. The breeds seemed to struggle a little in comparison to the evos. I love ebony as well. Feels like glass in comparison to rosewood. So much more smooth.

This is also why I couldn't justify buying a DNA.

thnx jjemmer, kinda makes you wonder whether the HAM was designed for stage lighting or sunsets.

my sentiments exaclty, but a new VWH is also rosewood. The price difference between a new VWH and a used DBK, would actually give you enough room to get the board exchanged for ebony (or pau ferro, or kingwood, or bloodwood, etc.)

Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

I disliked 7DBK I've played (about 5 I think). My Jem90HAM has a superwizard neck too, but the woods are much more solid and the edge of the fretboard isn't sharp. 7DBKs feel flimsy, like most post-shred-era RGs, and they also look cheap. I've got a 7VWH as well. No need to compare it to a 7DBK now, I reckon. Ofcourse one can still shred his @ss off on a 7DBK, but I don't like them.

The JEM7DBK is still worthy of comparison even to a JEM10th. The one which is not, however, is the JEM555. But you would still find the factory setup of the guitars to be poor from time to time .

That might seem a bold statement. But I know that the 10s I've played (6 of them...ranging from 5 minutes to an hour) couldn't get close to my 7VWH nor my 90HAM. And then I'm not even talking Maxxas or Vigier. The 10 never deliverd IMHO. Vigier rules guitarhood, btw.
I doubt that Ibanez would ever use the scarce decent woods they have on a 7DBK...that would probably make it as expensive as the high end Jems. Would you really think that a mere lasercut, plastic vine inlay could make out all that price difference? Think again. And someone must've personally drawn all the fake screw-dots.

Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

The main reason why Ibanez made the JEM7DBK is to provide a lower-priced JEM without going Korean. The 7VWH has fancier appointments like the vine inlay, scalloped fretboard, gold hardware etc. I bet that all the wood in Fujigen is the same. The wood used I bet is the same from the Universe to the JS. It's all based on personal preference anyway. If you like the 7VWH, then good for you. I find the Evos pups to be bit too high output for me.

Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

From pictures I've seen they use an ABC-rating on their woodpiles at Fujigen. And trying some of the "upper" models from the past few years has made me believe there's a guy with a whip sitting on the A pile. Ofcourse that guy has to pee sometimes, turning ordering a brandnew Ibanez into a lottery.
But all the fingerboards I've seen on the 7DBKs must've been from a B-pile. A little too dry, not a nice grain to them and a probably too light.
And yes, Evos are pretty hot...but you can take that edge away by turning volume and treble down a bit. The high-pass filter does the rest, I guess. When you use that extra headroom the guitar really sounds on fire, which is cool. Breeds are somewhat more civilised indeed.

Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

Here we go again....

First of all the Jem7DBK is a pure JEM no doubt about it. A 555 is not...
Personally speaking i prefer the DBk over the Vwh.
Some guys like the gold hardware on the vw but i find the silver one on the DBK much good looking. The breed pickups have a lot of dynamics and very versatile, i think they should be the standard for hums. not to mention they are on the DNA and the BRM as well.
The DBk is the lightest of all the guitars and got the thinnest neck i ever seen which is designed for steve's specs. Steve wanted the neck that way Which its a thrill to play.
All in all the DBK is a unique jem just like all the different jems models.
All depends on your taste of tone, look and feel.

Rabih

Re: JEM7DBK or JEM7VH ?

it does have a lot to do with taste - i'd venture to say that it's all about personal taste - try them both. i personally have NO love for the Breeds. i like the Evos. they seem to work well with my rig and the woods of the guitar very nicely. pups can be changed - no big issue. it's ALL personal taste - what guitar inspires YOUR best playing is the one you want. i played Elvis (my '04 7VWH) this past weekend at 4 different gigs and it pulls playing out of me that has never graced my fingers before. really. when i had my DBK it was a similar experience but the Breeds eventually didn't cut the mustard for me. it's ALL inspiration - if the guitar doesn't inspire you to play your best - what's the point of playing it?
for now, Elvis is giving me some serious inspiration - my band has been in awe this past month with my playing Elvis live - it's taken me to another plateau of playing.
"what inspires me?" is the question you need to ask yourself.
