Just picked up a JEM 7DBK tonight

Hey Guys,

I just grabbed a mint Jem 7DBK on the bay for $800 tonight with a non original hard case. I am new to collecting JEMs but it seemed like a good pick up to me. Anybody have any experience with this model as far as where it rates in the Jem world and playabilty? I should have it next week some time.

Best,
RG

$800 is a pretty good price for a DBK, most go for around $900ish...I haven't played one myself - but I've heard that if you can deal with the looks it plays great - it is after all a jem. I think in the archived threads section there's a topic on it and what people think - you may want to check there.

I think they are cool. With that finish, it is one of those guitars you wouldn't care if it got beat up a little, IMO. I would like to get one if I can get it fairly cheap. It's not a Jem I feel I need to have though.

To be fair he only played that DBK because they were given away after that show. So Serlui (Dutch Ibanez distributor) provided a DBK and a VBSL brand new for that purpose.

Not that there is anything wrong with a DBK...in many ways it's a poor man's DNA and how many times to you see Steve playing one of those?

The DBK is a great guitar, the fretboard is too wide for me though

I think it's one of the coolest JEMs. You should check out the poll with the same name (It's called 'The coolest JEM?'), by the way. It's really cool.

Apparently, the finish of the guitar is the same stuff as you find on some of Steve Vai's recording gear. That's where it came from.

Thanks guys for the comments, I am in negotiations on a DNA and a Jem10 as we speak in a package deal. I will take some pics when I get them all together assuming I get the deal done.

Not quite. The VSBL was given away (to Tom Trapp), the DBK wasn't - and that one wasn't from Serlui either.
The year before that, the two VSBL's were given away (to Dick Bakker and Co de Kloet). It was something Steve could do, but there were more practical reasons as well - such as not having to ship over multiple guitars.
