Maple fretboards - how to clean them

Hey guys, I recently rescued a Jem777DY from a fate worse than death! *The guy I bought it from wanted to block the bridge, shave the fretboard, put medium frets in with dot inlays and put Fender lace sensor pickups in it!!! In short, make it a Strat!
Anyway, the maple fretboard on this thing is filthy! *Is there a good way to get the fretboard clean without risking the wood? *I got the guitar for next to nothing so I'm not too concerned but I'm refinishing the body and would like the neck to look new as well.
Any help would be appreciated.
One last thing, as I said I'm refinishing the body but I love the look of the LNG. *Since the neck and inlays are the same between these guitars I was considering painting the body in the LNG colour. *Would this be considered sacreligous?

Maple fretboards

well my good man, to clean the fretboard just use a basic wood cleaner (old english ect.) it works good. Or buy the offical stuff from your local music shop. That's what I read anyway, did it on my strat with some old english and cleaned that puppy up great.
